Adlai E. Stevenson HI. Sen.

Sam J. Ervin, said yesterday the officials were the targets of Army unda'cover investigations during their campaigns or whBe they were in office. He charged they were placed under surveillance because they opposed or did not actively support the government's policy in Vietnam or because they disagreed with the domestic policies of the Nixon administration. A spokesman for the Army said the service was "gravely concerned" over Ervin's charges. He said such sur- of civilians was prohibited by Army policy.

Tie White House said it was "inconceivable" to President Nixon that the military would spy on political figures. Other congressmen responded with words. Cornelius Gallagher, D- N.J., head of a House subcommittee on invasion of privacy, said he had been pressing the Army about its undercover work since the first of the year. During the course of his researches, he said, he learned the Fort Holabird, data bank list of "war protesters" included the name of a much decorated and wounded general distinguished in the Vietnam war. Investigation showed his name had been included because an enlisted man, as a joke, had subscribed to an underground protest paper in the general's name, Gallagher said. Discovery of this embarrassing error reportedly helped Gallagher persuade the Army it was in over its head. Stevenson said at a news conference that "there is no place in a free society for snooping by the military in the peaceful political affairs of citizens." He urged Ervin to continue his investigation.

Mooney of Pittsburgh, N.Y. has been named purchasing director for Pima College after a semester- long delay during which more than 20 applicants were interviewed. Mooney, who is now equipment and purchasing coordinator at State University of New York, will take the post Jan. 18. College President Kenneth Harper said the delay in filling the post resulted from efforts to hire a minority group member.

Part of the college's basic philosophy is to maintain an ethnic balance whenever possible. "We tried our best to find a minority member to fill the post," Harper told Special Services director Grover Banks, "but were just not able to do so. Banks, a black, had asked whether Mooney is an anglo. During yesterday's board meeting, business manager Robert George announced the Ari- Bookstore will be awarded a contract to provide books and educational supplies for the new community college. Harper announced the ap- sointment of two faculty members Connie Howard of the 'home economics program, and James Martin of the geography program to serve as advisors to the board of governors.

The appointment of two students to serve as representatives to the board, was announced earlier. Both the faculty and student representatives will serve in a nonvoting capacity. Harper said an athletic coordinator will be chosen before the board's next meeting Jan. 20. The college president said efforts are under way, in cooperation with Model Cities representatives, to seek solutions to a continuing transportation problem for students.

Harper said students concerned about a proposed city anti-hitchhiking ordinance -now under study have participated in hearings on the proposal. Estimates show as many as 80 students hitchhike to the college daily. 2 Nuclear Tests Fired YUCCA FLAT, Nev. Dr. Gillett Dies; Rites Tomorrow Services will be held ioaior- Arizona Mortuary for Dr. Clarence H. Gilleit, professor emeritus of the College of Economics at the University of Illinois. He died at St.

Mary's Hospital Tuesday at the age of 66. Dr. Gillett was a winter visitor to Tucson for many years before moving here from Chicago last August. He lived at 5841 Bar in Tucson Estates. He had served as president of Gillett Investment Service in Chicago and had authored three books, "Economics for the Investor," "Investing for the Layman" and "Stock Market Timing." He is survived by his wife, Azella, of Tucson; two sons, Wendell of Las Graces, N.M., and Cmdr.
