Delta Denrocrat-Timeg Greenville, Miseissippi Wednesday, Sept. 23,1970 17 Bevalaque addresses Civitan Club By MITCH ARIFF, Sports Editor "We have a good football team if we'can get them working together," Dominic Bevalaque, St. Joseph head football coach, told the Greenville Civitan Club Tuesday noon at the Downtowner Motor Inn "Our team this year lacks the senior leadership that St. Joe teams have had in the past," Bevalaque continued. "Not one boy can step out there and take over." The Irish coach also told the Civitans that all but a couple of the football teams St.

Joe plays this season are Class AA schools. The Greenville Catholic school is Class BB. He said the Little Eight Conference, which St. Joe was a member of for 10 years, no longer is in existence. It was previously made up of Class BB and schools, but consolidation took care of that.

Bevalaque added that first Tunica got out of the league, then Marks quit the conference. Ruleville became a junior high school after court- ordered desegregation. All high school students moved over to Ruleville Central, the town's other high school. A couple of more teams then pulled out and that left only St. Joe, Shaw and Rosedale.

Shaw and Rosedale, however, consolidated and are now Class AA. The Irish, however will play both of those teams this season. Not trying to alibi, Bevalaque said he believes the fact that his team no longer- being in a conference coupled with having to meet AA schools week-after-vveek has kind of demoralized his players. Prior to fall practice, the Irish had 10 seniors and one junior ticketed for starting berths. One boy quit the squad, another transferred to another school and an injury forced one to leave the squad.

The Irish are still a veteran team, said Bevalaque. They can still start nine seniors and two juniors, but after that, according to Bevalaque, they are in dire need of depth. "We can bea anybody on our schedule on a given night," continued the Irish coaeh, and I believe we will have a successful season if we don't wear down or suffer any big injuries." Currently making up thej Irish roster are 12 seniors, two juniors and 14 sophomores, who Bevalaque said, "are not ready for varsity play." Dom Bevalaque He told the group how they opened the season with a big win over Oak Grove, La. but then fell in their second tilt in a close one (22-20) to St. Aloysius of Vicksburg.

The Irish had Oak Grove 25-7 as late as the fourth period, but mistakes and probably the lack of depth took its toll. The Irish, however, won the contest 25-23. He jokingly said that the Irish are just jinxed when they go to Vicksburg. "Nothing worked right. anything," he said.

A bad snap from center hurt the Irish along with several other costly mistakes. It was Bevalaque's sixth trip to Vicksburg and he's yet to record a victory there. His teams, however, have managed their share of victories over the Purple Flashes here in Greenville. Coming up this week is a tilt with East Tallahatchie, a member of the strong Delta Valley Conference. Bevalaque said Assistant Coach Mike O'Brien scouted East Tally against a very tough South Panola team last week.

O'Brien, who had seen St. Al against Clinton, rated East Tally as a better team than the Vicksburg school. ET has lost all three of its games this season, but all against tough DVC opposition. O'Brien was reported as saying that East Tally has a top passing game and is also a team that can move the ball on the ground as well. Bevalaque said the St.

Joe coaching staff has been sending their boys through all phases of the game in hope of getting them ready for the homecoming clash Friday night at Charles S. Kerg Field. Claude Rainey, project chairman of the Civitan Club, introduced Coach Bevalaque. President Dave Thomas presided over the meeting and expressed his thanks to the St. Joe coach for a fine talk.

Bevalaque answered several questions put fourth to him by curious Civitan members. He closed his talk by saying, "Are (here any more questions? I can talk all day on football."
