The event is being held in Spain for the first time, a tribute to Ballesteros' part in expanding the prestige and popularity of the Ryder Cup. Ballesteros, who had played in every Ryder Cup except one since 1979, said the reality of his new role as captain was sinking in fast. "It was a strange feeling when I went in the locker room," he said. "It's a dream of every player to play in the Ryder Cup but to be captain is very special, a great honor. I feel very lucky." Ballesteros was pleased to see that Nick Faldo, the Englishman who will be playing in his 1 1th Ryder Cup, traveled ahead of the rest of the European team to get an early start on practice.

Ballesteros singled out Faldo, one of his two captain's picks, as the man he would most trust playing the last hole. "Nick has shown dedication over geon), 1.50. Tiger Woods arrives at the Malaga Airport to being final preparations for the Ryder Cup. many years, and it's nice to see he is still so keen," the Spaniard said. "He wants to play well very badly, and I am sure he will make a tremendous contribution. "The whole team is very solid. Seven experienced players and the new energy of five new ones.

Everything is very positive. I couldn't have a better team." Ballesteros refused to discuss the one issue that has clouded his buildup to the defense of the trophy -7-the Miguel Angel Martin affair. Martin qualified for the European team in 10th and last place, but was dropped from the team after he asked for more time to prove he had fully recovered from wrist surgery. Replaced by Jose Maria Olazabal, Martin has threatened to take legal action. "I am here only to talk about the team and nothing else," Ballesteros said.

"There are no comments on that. We talk about the team and that's it." FROM IS Johnson and Steve Matthews won the Jaguars' first two games, threw for 306 yards and a touchdown as Jacksonville lost a 17-7 halftime lead, then rallied to go ahead 23-21 before the final play.

The Jaguars added the final extra point after many players had left the field. Unlike overtime, NFL rules require a team to attempt a conversion on a touchdown at the end of regulation even if the game is already decided. It was Bettis who rallied the Steel-ers (1-2), rushing for 114 yards, 97 in the second half as the Steelers took a 21-20 lead. But it was Brunell and Jimmy Smith who did the work, overcoming the second-half heroics of Bettis. Smith had 10 catches for 164 yards.
