"Television makes more ex- demands on a comedy writer than radio ever did in radio, what looked funny on paper generally was funny when spoken and it didn't have to alcohol. It is not true, I have be tailored to a specific star learned, that the journal's motto television, being a visual as is "hie haec hoc." But in any case there is nothing like reading. For example, the show business trade paper. The Hollywood Reporter, recently ran a provocative interview i Aaron Ruben, executive producer of CBS-TV's "(joiner Pyle" series, who had these comments to well as audio medium, and with comedy lines set within a situation storyline, is a different matter.

No matter how funny a line may be. if it doesn't fit the character, out it goes. "You probably have noticed that the most successful situation comedy shows are those in which the star comedian's true- TV PREVIEWS TONIGHT 6:30 P.M. COMBAT. "Fly Away Home." Neville Brand gives one of his better performances as a tough sergeant whose chief interest in life is the care and training of a flock of "spy" pigeons.

And when the safety of his birds is involved, nobody else matters. The tension builds as the platoon goes behind enemy lines and for a while it seems as if there must be a choice as to who will survive, the birds or the men. (Channel 9) 7:00 P.M. WORLD WAR T. "Battle Jutland." The battle of Jutland was the only truly massive naval encounter of World War I and though British casualties far exceeded German losses, the outcome left Britain as Queen the Sea.

There has possibly never been another Naval battle to match this one and this show does much to tell the factua story of an event which ha; served as a basis for many fie tional accounts. An utterly fasci nating documentary which goes into not only the battle itself but its background and various forms of naval strategy employed during the war. (Channe 13) 7:30 P.M. PETTICOAT I "The Great Buffalo Hunt." An incredibly episode with two guest stars, a buffalo and Reginald Gardiner. Gardiner stars as an English Lord who lets Uncle Joe con him into big game hunt for buffalo, with the only buffalo on the premises --a government surplus beast Yellowstone Nationa Park.

But, by the time the hunt begins, the girls have made a pet of the buffalo. Best scene is the actual hunt, which is so silly, it's funny. (Channel 13) McHALE'S NAVY. "Senator Parker, Sun." Good old Ensign Parker takes on Captain Binghampton again and fists and laughs fly with reckless abandon. Just as the captain thinks he's finally got Parker where he wants him, in front of a court martial, the word gets out that Parker has a relative who's not only a senator, but a senator involved with naval affairs.

(Channel 9) 8:00 P.M. TYCOON. "East Meets West." Cute show. Walter matches wits with a Japanese tycoon who's posing a threat to the Thunder Corporation by duplicating their products more cheaply. The show is loaded with obvious corn, but it's played so nicely, you don't care.

Walter Brennan and Jerome Cowan are at their best. (Channel 9) DOCTOR AND THE NURSES. "The a i Resemblance." Brock Peters guests as a patient wiio expresses his hypersensi- i i jt being a Negro in sarcasm and malice. Kimble's attempt to help stamp out a fire gets him injured and temporarily afflicted with amnesia. A combination of this additional infirmity plus the cooperation of some do-gooders gets him within inches of capture and only the fact that you know the series isn't about to end keeps the suspense down to a minimum. There's a fine guest appearance by Betty Garrett as a concerned hospital social worker. (Channel 9) ARIZONA'S WATER PROB LEMS. Special.

This is the first of three programs on current water problems in Arizona, which will be discussed by leading Arizona authorities. The programs will be presented in seminar form with two spokesmen presenting papers followed by a discussion. Tonight Rich Johnson of Phoenix will present a paper, "Statewide Water Picture." Johnson is president of the Central Arizona Project. Joseph Purcell, local assistant city attorney will discuss "Law and Water." A general discussion will follow and viewers may call in questions during this period. (Channel 6) 10:15 P.M.

BROADWAY life personality is extended-exaggerated, if you will into the character he portrays i a likeable personality, a comic is dead with a situation comedy series no matter how funny he is with his live act." Since there are so many situation comedies on television, much of the above makes sense and is worth considering, though the veteran broadcast listener and viewer can cite some notable exceptions to the radio theory--among them the old shows of Jack Benny, Fibber McGee and Molly, and Amos 'n' Andy, all of which had comedy situations and had to have specifically tailored humor, also. Along related lines, Life magazine last week ran a radio review in which the writer, Sam Moore, wondered "why the giants of radio seemed immortal, repeating the same jokes over and over, while tv stars succeed just as spectacularly, then plunge into oblivion." Moore then offered the pertinent points that radio made audiences ''work their imagination every minute and what you work for you like each listener had his own pictures, and that kept him coining back for more radio's discovery was that, if you let the customer do the work, you can tell the same joke a billion times." Also last week, the Saturday Review's communications editor, Richard L.

Tobin, reminded us that television ratings do not yet fall under the authority of an organization such as the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), which reliably has served newspapers and magazines for half a century. Tobin's article was of special note because during the congressional investigation was talk of up with its own equivalent of the ABC. The judge ruled yesterday in favor of Miss West, who sought a permanent injunction against singer Marie Lind, a 250-pound blonde who had been using the nickname.
