This means the only trains at Grand Central will be city subway lines and the Metro-North Railroad, which serves suburbs north of the city and in Connecticut. Until the change, Amtrak riders from upstate headed for Washington, D.C., got off at Grand Central and navigated their way through midtown to Penn Station. "Hey folks, you don't have to make this daunting cross-town connection any more," Amtrak spokesman Clifford Black said.

"You don't have to schlep luggage from 33rd and Seventh to 42nd and Park, you don't have to take a cab through midtown traffic or get on the subway." Connecting the two stations proved too complicated. So Amtrak is bringing the Empire Corridor trains into Penn Station via a 10-mile stretch of abandoned freight track along Manhattan's Hudson River shore. i rare Limited availability.
