In the opener, Willis made a couple of adjustments and shut down the Britsox from the start, striking out four and walking two. "I wasn't concentrating on anything but my mechanics," said Willis, a righthander. "I've been struggling a little bit. So I've been working on my mechanics." London took the lead in the second inning. Second baseman Rod Robertson doubled off right-handed starter Gar Finnvold (1-8), then left fielder Mike DeButch walked.

With two out, catcher Mike Gillette singled in Robertson to make it 1-0. In the second, center fielder Lou Frazier singled to lead off, then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Mendenhall. Designated hitter Ivan Cruz then singled to left to score Frazier and make it 2-0. The Britsox, who got a hit from Chick in the second, were retired in order in the third and fourth innings. A single by first baseman Willie Tatum in the sixth was the only other hit for the Britsox, who went down in order in the seventh.

"Toward the end, I started rushing it," said Willis, who entered the game with an 0-3 record and a 5.12 ERA in eight starts. "I had to settle back down. I just tried to get ahead of them. I was concentrating on keeping the ball down, throwing strikes. I was just going right at them." NORTHWESTERN REG.

In the first game, righthander Marty Willis pitched a two-hitter as London won, 5-0. "It's like the day before was wasted," said Britsox manager Jim Pan-kovits, referring to Tuesday's sweep by the Britsox, 3-2 and 1-0. "We came out flat. We had no enthusiasm, no life." In the second game, the Britsox took a 3-0 lead into the fifth when London scored two runs, one earned, off lefthander Ed Riley (6-4). Rick Sellers, who led off with a double, scored on a single by Kirk Menden-hall.

Mendenhall's single made it 3-2. Greg Sparks tied the score with a home run off the right field foul pole in the sixth. The score stayed 3-3 until Robertson's homer over the left field fence off Riley. The Britsox took the lead in the first on an RBI single by Bruce Chick. A single and a walk loaded the bases, but Colin Dixon struck out to end the inning.

In the fourth, left fielder Mike Beams led off with a triple. Dixon was intentionally walked, and Paul Thoutsis singled to left to score Beams to make it 2-0. By GEORGE SMITH Courant Staff Writer Central Connecticut assistant football coach Sal Cintorino, a first-team Division II All-America player for the Blue Devils in 1984, will be named coach of his alma mater at a 10 a.m. press conference today at the New Britain school. Cintorino, 30, has been an assistant coach at Central for six seasons. The fifth candidate was baseball coach "That was the tip-off to the whole day," Sampras said. "It was a long point, one I kept going for quite a while, and I ended up losing it And the next point was more painful for Sampras, 20, who defeated Agassi at the 1990 U.S. Open final, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. After a brief exchange of shots, Sampras was forced to hit a weak, lunging backhand high to Agassi at the net. Agassi nearly missed on the overhead, getting just enough of the ball so it hit the net chord, dropped over and landed right on the line.

"I'd like to see Andre win," Sampras said. "I think the fact that he hasn't won one, and that Michael Chang and Courier and I have, I think that bothers him a little bit." There were times in his two-day match with Ivanisevic when Courier looked vulnerable. Tuesday, leading Continued from Page CI his way to a five-set victory. He will meet the winner of the Petr Korda-Andrei Cherkasov match, which was suspended because of darkness at a set apiece. The Agassi-Sampras match had promise.

Sampras, after performing admirably in previous rounds, had gained confidence playing on clay. For most of the first set, Sampras had slightly the better of play until it came to the tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Agassi took a 4-0 lead but Sampras rallied to tie at 5, and at 6. Then, in short order, set and match were decided. The next point produced a long rally, the kind Agassi savors and Sampras merely tolerates.

Not surprisingly, Agassi won the point with a brilliant pashg shot. George Redman, who has been at Central 23 years, deluding 16 as an assistant football coach. Southington connection Former Southington High players Chris Petersen, Mark Sobolewski and Dave Majeski were selected this week in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. Petersen, a junior shortstop at Georgia Southern, was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the ninth round, Sobolewski, a senior outfielder at Florida Southern, was drafted by the Oakland A's in the 20th round and Majeski, a senior outfielder at the University of Florida, was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in an undisclosed rnd. two sets to love, he lost his first set of the tournament, and Wednesday he fell behind by 4-1 in the fourth set.

But Courier wasn't worried. And Ivanisevic knew he wasn't worried. "He's 4-1 down, and concentrated," Ivanisevic said. "I canfeel it across the court.".
