Valley Regional-Oeep River, 40; 4. Litchfield, 34; 5. House- SUffllLO 3, IMMACULATE 4 from Tigers Terryville eliminates RHAM ByDOMAMORE Courant Staff Writer NEW BRITAIN -Tim Smith has a degree in marketing from Boston College, but even he couldn't market I his pitching numbers.

Smith, a righthander for the New Britain Red Sox, lost his first seven decisions, allowing 8.5 earned runs a game. "Yeah, I've been thinKing a 101 about my degree lately," Smith said, indicating the fear of having to find a new line of work. "You keep looking at those numbers. It's a matter of putting them out of your mind." Smith pitched a five-hitter to beat the London Tigers 1-0 Tuesday night and complete the Britsox's sweep of a doubleheader at Beehive Field. Bruce Chick's sixth-inning single scored Willie Tatum, who had sin- gled and stolen second, with the only run of the game against righthander Steve Wolf (1-1).

In the first game, Greg Blosser hit a three-run homer as New Britain won 3-2. Righthander Brian Conroy! (3-2) pitched a seven-hitter to beat righthander Brian Warren (3-3). New Britain, coming off a 2-6 is 23-24. Smith (1-7, 7.30 ERA) walked two and struck out two for his first Double A victory. "It's a huge relief," he said.

"So' now I'm 1-0, and we'll take it from there." Smith, 6 foot 4, 190 pounds, was. 12-9 at Class A Lynchburg last sea- son, leading the Carolina League in ERA at 2.16. He's at his best when he throws over the top, pitching coach Rick Wise and catcher Ruben Rodri-guez kept reminding Smith, 24, throughout the game. "He kept his elbow up and threw the ball downhill tonight," Wise said. "He was more of a power pitcher." Despite his start, there was no thought of sending Smith back to Lynchburg to regain his confidence.

"That never once crossed my mind," Britsox manager Jim Panko-vits said. "We've told him we were going to stick with him, because we have no doubt he can pitch in this league. That was the Tim Smith we know tonight." The Tigers (24-22) stole three bases against Smith, but Rodriguez picked two runners off base and caught pinch runner Mike DeButch trying to steal second in the seventh to end London's last threat. In the first, he picked Lou Frazier off third with a snap throw from his knees. "You don't see too many guys do that in Double A ball," Chick said.

"That's for sure." Blosser's homer in the first game was his 10th, tops in the Eastern League. He has 30 RBI in 40 games. In his past 11 games, Blosser is 14-for-36, raising his average from .155 to .216. Capitols beat Herb's, 6-5 Staff reports Kevin Beaudoi drove in the winning run with a single in the top of the seventh inning to lead the Newington Capitols to a 6-5 Greater Hartford Twilight League victory over Herb's Sport Shop Tuesday night in Cromwell. Gino Caro had a three-run homer and Greg Uccello a two-run homer for Newington.

Jeff Brennan had a three-run homer for Herb's. East Hartford Jets 6, Mallove's Jewelers 3: Pete Zippel had a two-run single and Todd Mercier an RBI single in a four-run first to lead the East Hartford Jets (2-1) over Mallove's (2-1) at McKenna Field in East Hartford. Vernon Orioles 6, Evans Insurance 1: Pete Palmer pitched a six-' hit complete game to lead Vernon over Evans Insurance at Duprey Field in South Windsor. John Gallic homered and teammate Steve Kra-jewski hit a bases-loaded double as. Vernon scored five runs in the fifth Shaw.
