THE HARTFORD COURANT: W.dnejdoy, January 22, 1992 D7 In his mother's footsteps NFL notebook ttWhen it comes to football, she really knows her stuff. It's like having another coach. Bills linebacker Marvcus Patton on his mother Barbara, a former pro football player 53- By TERRY PRICE Courant Staff Writer MINNEAPOLIS Buffalo Bills linebacker Marvcus Patton always wanted to play defense just like his mother. But Barbara Patton thought her son was best suited to play running back. "No, mom," Marvcus would protest.

"I want to play defense just like you." In the mid-1970s, Barbara Patton played outside linebacker for a women's professional football team. The Los Angeles Dandelions played tackle football, with all the equipment used by a men's team. The league in which Patton's mother played also included teams in San Diego, Albuquerque, N.M., and Dallas. In her playing days, Barbara, who also works for the federal Smith's infection a mystery Leonard Smith, Buffalo's starting strong safety, missed media day Tuesday at the Metrodome because team medical personnel thought the stress on his infected left knee would set back his recovery. "I didn't want him running and walking around and standing," Bills team physician Richard Weiss said.

"Whatever rest we could give him, we decided to give him." The Bills issued no official update on Smith's prognosis for Sunday's Super Bowl against the Washington Redskins. The teams don't have to put out an official injury report until today. Monday night, coach Marv Levy said Smith was questionable. "We're optimistic, that's why we brought him along." Weiss said. Weiss said team officials aren't sure exactly how the nine-year veteran contracted the infection.

"I never saw anything like it," he said. "It just came on Monday afternoon lafter the AFC Championship. We don't know whether it was from an abrasion or a bump. There's a lot of abrasions they get on this Astroturf. It's unusual.

He's the first one I ever saw do that." Weiss said the Bills have been treating Smith with antibiotics. "It's pretty much under control right now," Weiss said. "We can run him Friday and Saturday." Bills defensive end Brae Smith, saying he was hurt by racist letters he received as he recovered this season from training camp knee surgery, hinted that he might leave the team after the Super Bowl. "After this particular ballgame, there are going to be some options that I'm going to explore," Smith said. Asked if leaving the Bills is one of them, he added, "It's a good possibility.

Too many things have happened that I can't forget." Smith has one year left on a five-year, $7.5 million contract. Steelers name Cowher coach Bill Cowher signed a four-year contract to coach the Pittsburgh Steelers and immediately began trying to assemble a coaching staff. Cowher, 34, becomes the NFL's second-youngest head coach. Cincinnati's David Shula, 32, is the youngest. He also is only the Steelers' second coach in the past 25 years.

Cowher comes to Pittsburgh from Kansas City, where he was defensive coordinator the past three seasons. He will interview former Southern Cal coach Tad Tollnar about a possible assistant coach's job and already has talked with former Packers coach Lindy Infanta. Reeves fires Shanahan Mika Shanahan is out as offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos in an apparent power struggle with coach Dan Reaves. Reeves, who confirmed the firing, said his relationship with Shanahan had become unworkable. Toward the end of the 1991 season, Reeves and Shanahan rarely spoke, according to a player speaking on the condition he not be identified.

The firing took place Monday. Shanahan was not available for comment. Chris Ault, the University of Nevada-Reno's football coach and athletic director, will meet today with officials of the San Diego Chargers about an assistant coaching position Seattle Seahawks fullback John L. Williams and defensive tackle Cortex Kennedy will go to the Pro Bowl to replace injured Christian Okoyo of Kansas City and Ray Childress of Houston. Wire reports government's General Services Administration in LA, carried 130 pounds on a 5-foot-4 frame.

She was fast, but she also hit: she once broke the helmet of an opposing player. Patton lost his father at age 9 a Los Angeles County police officer, he was killed in a drug bust. Since joining the Bills in 1990 as an eighth-round draft pick from UCLA, Patton has relied on his mother for support and advice. "She's my biggest fan and my biggest critic," said Patton, who will see action Sunday against the Washington Redskins mostly on special teams. "No matter what I've done she's always been behind me and and tried to help me in every way possi- ble.

"When it comes to football, she really knows her stuff. It's like having another coach." Greenberg Rewarding experience for Rypien Continued from Page Dl this, and Norwood has no intention of stoking the fire by brushing aside the ashes of that disappointment and uncovering what burning embers might remain. There is no sin in this. Everyone even a field-goal kicker whose failure ruins the lives of millions of fans has a right to his private thoughts, if not to privacy. It was a mannerly but tedious one-hour verbal tug of war that took place Tuesday at the Metrodome between Norwood and the national media.

Norwood stood on a platform, skins fan despite growing up in Alexandria, a Washington suburb. But it was the only kick he attempted that the nation will remember. Is that fair? Of course not. Neither is it fair that anybody even dared to suggest that Norwood choked that day. This was not some 25- or 30-yard chip shot he missed.

Even under ideal circumstances, 47-yard field-goal attempts on grass fields are not 50-50 propositions. In 18 games this season, Norwood is 7-for-ll on kicks between 40-49 yards, but 14 of those games were on his preferred surface, artificial turf Asked if he would have felt much worse had he cost the Bills that Super Bowl by missing a short kick, Norwood said, "I think that has some merit." Sounds like a Dukakis answer. What's been his worst moment since missing the kick? "It gets too much towards going back (reliving the past," Norwood said. "I'm not going to do that I'm not going to wallow in that. I'm trying to cooperate here to an extent" Norwood said he understands it's "just human nature" for people to want to know how he feels, but it's his nature to be "focused toward this weekend" and "taking 'em one at a time" and not to think about the script he would like to write for Sunday's game because "it's out of my control." Sunday, he said, "I have no reason to doubt that great things will occur." And why not? He's "kicking good." unfairly, I might add began comparing his missed field-goal attempt to Bill Buckner letting Mookie Wilson's grounder go between his legs.

Even more amazing than Norwood's ability to turn aside psyche-probing questions was that he did it without showing a hint of irritation. He would be robotic in his politeness: Not even a sigh or sarcastic slight. "I'm not standing up here getting aggravated," Norwood said. "I look atlthe interview sessions in a positive way, and with understanding." For most of us, the past is prologue. We examine the past to better understand the present, and to predict the future.

Most athletes are not like that If there is anything painful in their past, they try to block it out for fear it will repeat On Tuesday, Norwood refused to talk about how he kicked in last year's Super Bowl and would only say that these days, "I'm kicking good." Just in case any of us were daydreaming and didn't write it down the first time, Norwood repeated it. One reporter counted him saying "I'm kicking good" 17 times during the hour. Who said mantras have to be grammatical? "Regurgitate, regurgitate," Norwood said. "You're living in the past You might need to, to write your article, but I don't It was only one kick of a career. The circumstances it took place in were not in my control." It was only one kick out of a seven-year NFL career for the ex-soccer player, a 31-year-old James Madison graduate who was never a Red behind a lectern, responding to questions about last year's Super miss and its effect, if any, on his psyche.

Of course, there is a huge difference between respond tsev- mark. The question mark we had was could he stay healthy. He's done that and he's played very consistently." The hesitancy also stemmed from Rypien's performance in the Redskins' 28-10 loss to the 49ers in the playoffs last season. After rejuvenating the club by leading it to five victories in its past seven games to get into the playoffs, Rypien had a bad day against San Francisco, throwing for three interceptions, including one that was returned 61 yards for a touchdown that iced the game. Rypien knew the job would be his coming into this season, but he knew he needed to improve and stay healthy.

The patience of the team was in danger of running out An offseason training program that caused him to drop 15 pounds was part of Rypien's concerted effort to solidify his situation. "He's also focused totally on football," Theismann said. "He told me he hasn't touched a golf club in four months. I think by signing the one-year contract he made a commitment to do whatever it took to be better. I think he put pressure on himself." Rypien never doubted himself.

"I felt in the back of my mind if I could stay healthy and practiced week in and week out and stay sharp with everything I'm doing that this could be the team that I could lead for years to come," Rypien said. Rypien was second in the NFL to Bills quarterback Jim Kelly with a 97.9 rating and landed the top spot in the Pro Bowl for the NFC. The bomb has been his signature, completing 13 passes of 40-plus yards. His 45-yard touchdown pass to Gary Clark in the Redskins' 41-10 victory over the Lions in the NFC Championship Game was an electrifying throw that clinched the game. Rypien also has corrected a habit of holding onto the ball too long.

Rypien had a season any quarterback would take. And he still devolving. "If I can do it for years to come that's the thing that's important," Rypien said. "You look at guys like the Montanas, the Marinos, the El-ways, the guys that have been doing it for years I'd like to be considered in that same group. I know it's going to take an opportunity to come back next year and continue it and play at that level." Continued from Page Dl pride.

Rypien, 29, was born in Calgary, Alberta, played football at Washington State and is the first Canadian quarterback to play in the Super Bowl. "I hope all the Canadians are proud of the fact that they've got a native Canadian in one of the greatest sporting events ever," Rypien said. "I'm happy on behalf of all Canadians. Hopefully, they can say the Redskins are Canada's team." The Redskins are Rypien's team, finally, though there was doubt about that right up until this season, his fifth since being drafted in the sixth round in 1986. Rypien's first four years in Washington, including two on injured reserve, were a series of fits and starts.

He would show promise and then he'd get hurt. He'd show more promise and then he'd get hurt again. It was frustrating for the entire organization. Even now there is a tiny hint of reluctance to annoint Rypien, out of fear of another setback. "I think Ryp is earning his way," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said.

"He started the year as a real question ing to a ques- NORWOOD tion and actually answering it, as in, providing information. Despite repeated questioning by some 50 media members coming at him from about 80 angles, Norwood revealed nothing of his inner thoughts and feelings about what has happened since his Super miss. Defense Secretary Dick Cheney would give an evenhanded appraisal of the merits of Operation Desert Storm before Scott Norwood would tell you what's been going on in that brain of his since some people Buy it. Sell it. Find it.
