Simmons was elected Wednesday to fill the unexpired term of Republican state Rep. Frank Turek, who died in May. Simmons had 2,172 votes, to 1,434 for Democrat Steven E.

Donahue and 1,230 for petitioning candidate Gail A. Shea, according to unofficial returns. "I'm very excited, very pleased (but) at the same time I'm apprehensive because I realize substantial problems are awaiting me up in Hartford," Simmons said. and the American Medical Association this year recommended that their AIDS-infected members either inform patients of their condition or stop doing surgery and other invasive procedures. The AMA Wednesday, at its national convention, rejected a proposal to require healthcare workers to be tested for AIDS, but endorsed voluntary testing.

The recommendations came after five patients of a Florida dentist who died of AIDS were diagnosed with the virus that causes AIDS. A doctor at Yale-New Haven Hospital said Donaldson's former patients have little to fear. "I would advise them to go about their business," Dr. John Fenn said. Associated Press A West Hartford orthodontist died of AIDS in 1989 without having told his patients he was infected, a television station reported Wednesday.

Dr. Christopher Donaldson, 40, died in Farmington on Nov. 30, 1989. The cause listed on his death certificate was AIDS, WTNH-TV in New Haven reported. Donaldson, who practiced in Tor-rington, New Hartford and Hartford for about six years, continued his practice after he became ill, WTNH reported.

It was not known Wednesday whether Donaldson wore protective clothing, such as gloves and a mask, while working.
