"At times the injury affected my play. But there's no question I'm headed in the right direction." Are the Brewers heded in the right direction? Manager George Bamberger seems to think so. "The 1986 Milwaukee Brewers will definitely have a new look this coming Bamberger said Sunday. 'We're going to go with our younger players.

We've got good depth with "We have always believed in young players," added General Manager Harry Dalton. "Our young pitchers will really push the veterans for a spot on the pitching If the Brewers stay injury free, if the youngsters make the team and if injured players make successful recoveries, then Bamberger likes his chance. "You just can't win a pennant with nine guys, you need 25 that you can count on," said Bamberger. The youth movement, however, initially will be without the experience of 12-year veteran Cecil Cooper. The Brewers first baseman is recovering from elbow surgery and iwu ui me Deuer ieams in ane-boygan County waged a heated battle for the championship in the final weekend of the 67th annual Sheboygan Men's Bowling Association tournament.

Mike Klee and Steve Hoppert with 660 and 652 totals led the Werner Kummer team, while Ralph Champeau's 699 topped Steve's Pro Shop. Other members of the scratch champion team were: Steve tiin-preis (559), Tom Scharenbroch (618), Dennis Ploeckelman (645) and Ed Shircel (621).

In addition, first baseman Billy Joe Robldoux was honored as the minor league player of the year. But the 22-year-old Robidoux has an aching right shoulder due to an injury suffered before a Dominican winter league game in November. "It has responded well" to an exercise program, Robidoux said. "I now have 85 percent of the flexibility and strength, which is good in so short a time." Robidoux's doctors say it should be better in time for spring training. "The organization has taken some steps to push the team in a positive direction," said veteran third baseman Paul Molitor. "We might not be a legitimate contender right away, but we might surprise some people too." The Brewers finished sixth in the seven-team AL East last season. Molitor made the comments Sunday night before receiving the team's 1985 comeback player of the year award at the 33rd annual Diamond Dinner at a downtown hotel. Molitor, one of the building blocks for the Brewers this season, had successful elbow surgery in 1984.

Molitor, who hit .297 in 1985, also collected the Harvey Kuenn Award for hitting excellence. and 6 p.m. By The Associated Press A couple of Wisconsin colleges helped opponents break nagging losing streaks during weekend basketball activity while nationally ranked UW-Whitewater preserved its undefeated record. UW-Parkside led 31-27 at half-time, but Kentucky State ended a seven-game losing era with a 76-66 nonconference victory with the help of 12 unanswered points. Mark Zuk-ley led Parkside (12-5) with 18 points. Northern Michigan, ending its losing spell at four games, whipped Lakeland College 120-77.

The Parkside and Lakeland losses were on the road Saturday. Wisconsin schools on their home courts had better luck. Cooper also was honored by Athletes for Youth with their 'Good Guy Award' for his efforts on behalf of the community's youth.

Cooper, 36, thinks his left elbow is getting better. "It seems like it's coming OK," Cooper said. "About three-quarters of the swelling has gone down, but I can't straighten my arm out completely. I don't have all the flexibility I should have yet." Other Brewers honored Sunday night were shortstop Ernest Riles and pitcher Ted Higuera. Higuera was honored as the Brewer's most valuable pitcher of 1985 because of a 15-8 record in his rookie season.

Riles got the club's rookie of the year award. "I feel better going into spring training this year than last year," said Frank Howard, the team's batting coach. "Maybe I know the kids better." A sack on the next play forced a field goal attempt that was foiled by a high center snap. Rypien didn't get the call to become a Senior Bowl performer until two other quarterbacks, Robbie Bosco of Brigham Young and Jack Trudeau of Illinois, pulled out with injuries. He got in the game on the North's first possession after Mike Norseth of Kansas, the starter, was knocked out on the eighth play when he banged his chin to the turf, knocking out two teeth and requiring 40 stitches. Rypien hit McCallum on-an 11-yard scoring strike at the end of the North's first possession.

(AP) The pre-game hype centered on Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson, but the on-the-field heroics were left to others in the 37th Senior Bowl football game.

Washington State's Mark Ry-pien, who was a late addition to the North roster because of injuries to two other quarterbacks, fired three touchdown passes to provide most of the offensive fireworks. Navy's Napoleon McCallum claimed the Most Valuable Player award after the Yanks rolled to a 31-17 victory in Saturday's contest. Jackson, the two-time Ail-American from Auburn, was held to only 48 yards on 11 carries, but he did have one big play, a 48-yard scamper on a short pass completion that set up the South's first touchdown. "He was under more pressure than anyone all week," South Coach Leeman Bennett of Tampa Bay said of Jackson, who was whisked away from Ladd Memorial Stadium in a police car moments after the game ended. Tampa Bay has the first pick in the upcoming National Football League draft, but Bennett hasn't said who his team will select.

Jackson, also a college baseball star, has said he won't decide which sport to enter until later in the spring. "The guy takes your breath away," North Coach Dan Reeves of Denver said of Jackson. "That play (48-yard pass play) shows exactly what he can do." The North defense probably kept the South from gaining the momentum when it stopped Jackson on two occasions. It halted him on a 26-3127. 26-3129, 26-3259.
