1-800-564-8212 By Kenan Heise Jribune Staff Writer Niles Polk Rumely Newton, 70, a psychologist and professor emeritus of psychiatry and behavior sciences at Northwestern University Medical School, wrote, taught and lectured on women before, during and after childbirth. She also authored a column, "Your family, Your Child," in the Tribune from January 1973 to October 1974. i A resident of the Near North Side, she died of a heart attack Sunday at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. was deeply committed to 'fesues of mothers and children sind to the programs that support their healthy development," said Bernice Weissbourd, founder and president of Family Focus. Weissbourd, who had been a student of Mrs.

Newton's, added: was a superb teacher, a close friend and a founding board member of Family Focus. She stayed actively interested in it for the full 7 years." Her special interests included health psychology and the broader aspects of reproduction, particu larly birth, breast-feeding and early parenting. She did pioneering research and applied her science by writing for women and parents. First published in 1957, her "Family Book of Child Care" went through 12 printings and became a key home reference book, espe- cially for members of the La Leche League. She also wrote "Newton on Breast Feeding" and "Newton on Birth and Women." Her curriculum vitae lists 80 professional articles in such journals as "Obstetrics and Gynecology," "Pediatrics," "Birth" and the "Journal of Human Lactation." During the time in which Mrs.

Newton established herself in the field, men were the principal experts and authors on the subject. She received a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr, a master's in child development from Teachers College at Columbia University, and in 1952 a doctorate from Columbia. In addition, she studied from 1962-65 under noted anthropologist Margaret Mead. She was a research associate in obstetrics at the University of Meningitis victim Carolyn By Rhoda E. For the last two years, Carolyn' -'Schulmeister of Island Lake battled skin tuberculosis. The 16-year-old Wauconda High School junior died Sunday at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago of meningococcal meningitis, a complication of the disease. "She was such a loving kid, it was unbelievable," said her father, Dennis. "She cared so much about people and especially kids. One time, we were missing three frozen pizzas.

She was a good student and a good kid." Miss Schulmeister was diag-nosed a month ago with meningococcal meningitis by doctors who described the disease as a secondary illness complicated by her lupus, which she contracted when she was 14. Meningitis affects membranes of the nose and throat, causing inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Miss Schulmeister was the eighth person to die of the disease this year in Illinois, according to the state Public Health Department. "Because of the lupus, her body wasn't strong enough to fight it off," her father said. "Lupus had attacked her liver and kidneys.
