Presley Show Tops Ratings TOF OPEN EVERY DAY FROM 9 to 9 SUNDAYS 10 la 5 By GEORGE ERES TV-Radio Editor When Elvis Presley decided to make a TV special, he told reporters one of the reasons was that he felt the time was right. He was right. His show topped the national Nielsen ratings for the week ending Dec. 8. Times do change. You may remember back when he was on an Ed Sullivan show, the camera never was allowed below his belt buckle because there was concern about TV audience reaction to the way ie moved. Anyway, Elvis's special showed all of him without any particular hue and cry, except from a few fans who didn't consider that Elvis was sufficiently appreciated. THE PRESLEY show moved "Rowan Martin's Laugh-In" into second place in the ratings. Other shows in the top 20, in order, were: "Charlie Brown's Christmas," Fantasy Hour, "Family Affair," "Mayberry RFD," N a t i o n a l Geographic's "Reptiles Amphibians," Dean Martin, "Bewitched," "Corner Pyle," "Julia," "Name of the Game," "Beverly Hillbillies," "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke," Carol Burnett, "Mission: Impossible," "Here's Lucy," Red DOOLEY Smashes ALL COLOR TV PRICES! 1969 MODEL COLOR TV CONSOLE 23 . tit. in.TM.,. Skelton, "Dragnet" "The F.B.I." and "NAME of the Game" which showed up in the top 20, hasn't been up that high in some time. The show has a trio of stars, Tony Franciosa, Gene Barry and Robert Stack, and has featured Susan Saint James who is given star listing in the segment to air Friday night. Incidentally, the studio denies reports that Franciosa is quitting the series. Spokesmen reported he is at work on episodes and "happy." * * * * * STARTING next week, "The Jonathan Winters how" and "Hawaii Five- 0" will switch time slots on Ch. 2. "Hawaii Five-O," currently aired at 8 p.m. Thursdays, will move to the Winters time, 10 p.m. Wednesdays. Neither of the shows las been doing well in the ratings and the network lopes the shift will help. Where it will be welcome is with the organizations who have been protesting the "Hawaii Five- 0" show's early showing because of its high-vio- ence rating. In its new spot "Hawaii Five-O" will have to corn- Open Everydiy 9-9 (Except Sunjiys) Sindiyi 10-1 pete with "The Outsider." Winters goes opposite the end of "Dan'.e! Boone" and the beginning of "Ironside." The prospects for improved ratings for the two shows, considering the competition, don't look too good from here. * * * * THE AMERICAN Broadcasting Co. is dropping the Dick Cavett morning show at the end of January, and turning the time back to local Ch. 7. However, Cavett got a new five-year contract with ABC and will open his show again in May. He'll be on in prime-time, three nights a week. In his new outing, he'll be competing with reruns. * * * * S. I. HAYAKAWA, acting president of San Francisco State College, is the guest on Ch. 28's "Black Perspective" at 8:30 tonight.
