Another course rich in culture has been developed around "Americas," a 10-part documentary series that examines contemporary Latin America and the Caribbean. Narrated by Raul Julia, "Americas" focuses on issues ranging from economic development to religion to the role of women in Latin American society.

Closer to home is "Worlds of Childhood," which deals with the subjects of growth, child abuse and other issues related to children. Other courses new this fall include "Personal Finance and Money Management," and "Rural Communities: Legacy and Change." By taking WYCC's telecourses, a student can earn an associate's degree. But more than watching TV is involved. "We find it takes a reaUy disciplined student to do it this way," Aleskow says. "We call it 'distance teaming' non-traditional students in distance learning.

The only time the student has to come in (to City Colleges) is for the exam. "This is a very special endeavor," Aleskow says. "It's not just television, which has great potential, but on top of it is an educational point of view that allows viewers to have something meaningful in their lives." Carving its own niche in the Chicago viewing area is WYIN-Ch. 56, a PBS station that sends its signal out of northwest Indiana. General Manager Richard Parker says programming on his station is designed to assure as little duplication as possible with WTTW and WYCC.

The most popular programs, he says, are Indiana University and Purdue University basketball games. "We discovered that no one in the area was providing that service and that there was a real desire for it Last year we ran some 70 college basketball games." The second-most-popular show, Parker says, is "The Lawrence Welk Show."
