PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) Scottsdale police sought unsuccessfully Thursday to obtain a murder indictment and arrest warrant for a close friend of slain actor Bob Crane, the Arizona Re- public said in its Friday's editions.

The newspaper said neither Maricopa County Attor- ney Charles Hyder or police I would confirm the indict-Z ment was sought for John Carpenter, long-time friend of the Waterbury, na-; tive, who was with Crane hours before he was found beaten to death June 29. The Republic quoted sources close to the investi-; gation as saying Carpenter 1 has been the prime suspect since the slaying occurred. Police have questioned Car-1 penter at least four times since the murder. Carpenter reportedly of-; fered to take a "truth serum" and a polygraph test, but police reportedly, de-! clined the offer, the newspaper said. I Carpenter, who lives in Los Angeles, was not availa-r ble for comment on the gations.

Crane, a glib former disc jockey, began his professional al entertainment career with the former Connecticut Sym-l phony Orchestra in 1944. Police met with Hyder's staff Thursday morning to discuss information gathered so far in the investigation. "The Scottsdale Police De- partment investigation into the murder of Bob Crane has developed a suspect in the i homicide," said Scottsdale Police Lt. Ron Dean, who is heading the investigation. "The results of the investigation leading to the suspect have been turned over to the Maricopa County Attorney's office.

The investigation is continuing," Dean said in a prepared statement. Major Mike Gannon, Dean's superior, said later an indictment and warrant were being sought so the suspect could be brought back to Arizona for further ques- tioning. The Republic said Gannon refused to confirm Carpen-; ter is the suspect, but he did confirm that the request for an indictment was a strate- gic move, possibly with the intention of placing pressure on the suspect. Crane was killed by two Driving Antics Charged in Death of Man TRUMBULL A cat-. and-mouse game between two motorists on the Merritt Parkway during rush hour Thursday led to the death of one of them, police said.
