She injured her knee late in the season, and her recovery time ballooned because of what Lewis' father, Gary, said was a misdiagnosis. "The doctor we went to wasn't a sports doctor, and he didn't even refer us to a physical therapist," Gary Lewis said. "He just told us to ice it." Lewis missed her entire eighth-grade season. Despite playing with a brace in the spring for the Mac Irvin Lady Fire AAU team, she kept feeling pain in her knee.

At her first practice playing without the brace in July 2012, Lewis retore her ACL. "We think her knee was torn anyway, but the brace held it together and kept the knee stabilized," Gary Lewis said. As his daughter's personal trainer since second grade, Gary Lewis decided to call Dr. Brian Cole, who guided Bulls star Derrick Rose through his first ACL injury. Cole noticed Lewis also suffered a torn meniscus.

Lewis completed a rigorous recovery program Cole designed that included a detailed return-to-sports evaluation. Lewis returned with a dazzling effort against Rolling Meadows on Dec. 7 no brace required. "I was hyped for that first game against Rolling Meadows," Lewis said. "I was in the zone.

It felt great to be back, and to play well against a good team." Lewis has no doubt that she'll regain her status as a top prospect in the 2016 recruiting class. "I'm hoping to get two more state championships and play for the USA team," she said. "I think I will get better over the summer and am hoping to be considered one of the top players in the country." By Bob Narang Special to the Tribune After sitting out nearly three years because of a pair of knee surgeries, Young sophomore point guard Kiara Lewis reintroduced herself with a storybook comeback. The 5-foot-8 Lewis went from coveted high-level prospect to forgotten player back to elite recruit She bookended her return to the court with sterling performances against highly ranked Rolling Meadows. In her first high school game since tearing her right ACL in February 2011 as a seventh-grader, Lewis scored a game-high 17 points and added 10 rebounds in Young's season-opening victory against the Mustangs.

Three months later, Lewis capped her comeback by scoring a team-leading 20 points in a 60-44 victory against Rolling Meadows in the Class 4A state championship game, Young's second state title in three years. Lewis, whom her teammates and coaches call "Ki-ki," was the catalyst behind Young's run and season-ending 16-game winning streak. In her two state tournament games at Red-bird Arena, Lewis shot 13-for-22 from the floor, including 4-for-5 on 3-point-ers. She collected 13 rebounds, six steals, four assists, made all five free-throw attempts while committing only six turnovers for Young (32-3). For her efforts, Lewis is the TribuneWGN-Ch.

9 Preps Plus Athlete of the Month for March. "I just knew I was going to come back strong after sitting out last year," Lewis said. "It was hard watching us lose at state last year. We knew we had the talent all year to win a state championship. We played well as a team at state.

I was just "I knew I was going to come back strong after sitting out last yean" Young's Kiana Lewis trying to help us win after losing last year." 'Great to be back' Young coach Corry Irvin repeatedly has said Lewis' injury last season was the difference between the Dolphins' third-place state finish and a potential run at a title. Marian Catholic crushed Young 63-39 in a state semifinal last March. "The way that Kild plays makes everybody confident," Irvin said. "We were missing that last year. She sees the floor so well, and her ability to know when to score or get other people involved is special." Considered one of the top players in the country for most of her middle-.
