JaCoby, UTC, USNR retired, 77, of 138 Hills East Hartford, died Saturday, Oct 20, 1979, at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Born in Portland, he had lived In East Hartford the last 27 years. He retired In 1967 from Pratt Whitney Aircraft Group of United Technologies East Hartford, where he had been employed for 20 years. He was a member of South Congregational Church, East Hartford.

He was a Navy veteran of World Wars I and II. He Is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vivian (Aston) JaCoby of East Hartford; a son, Alexander A. JaCoby of East Hartford; two brothers, Albert- Norqulst and Watson Norquist; a sister, Mrs. Marlon Lukcso, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Mr. JaCoby's home, 138 Hills East Hartford. Burial will be In Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Full military honors will be accorded. Friends may call at his home Tuesday, 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.

Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm Rocky Hill, has charge of arrangements. The storm, also left 143 persons hospitalized, 350 injured, and caused an estimated $254 million in property damage. Born in Hartford, Vendette had lived in West Hartford before moving to Manchester several years ago. He attended West Hartford schools and was a graduate of Conard High School, West Hartford. He was a foreman for 17 years with the H.R.

Poriss Paving Co. before working for Dufford. A resident of 37 Downey Drive, Vendette leaves his wife, Barbara Vendette; a son, Michael A. Vendette, and a daughter, Nicole A. Vendette, both of St Thomas, Virgin Islands; his father, Michael Vendette of Fort Pierce, and a sister, Mrs.

Patricia Kuzianik of North Willington. Funeral services are Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Richard W. Sbeehan Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain West Hartford. Burial is in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery.

Vendette of Manchester, a 37-year-old construction worker, Sunday became the third victim of the tornado that swept through Windsor and Windsor Locks Oct. 3.

Vendette died Sunday at Hartford Hospital after 18 days on the critical list. He was injured while sitting in a truck with a fellow construction worker, William Kowalsky, 24, of Manchester, who was the tornado's first victim. Both Vendette and Kowalsky were employed on a construction job for the Dufford Construction Co. of Glastonbury. "We were paving a parking lot for a Windsor bank," William A.

Dufford, president of the firm, said Sunday night "When it started to rain, they jumped in the truck." Debris then flew through the window of the truck and struck both men in the head and neck, according to witnesses. Kowalsky was dead on arrival at the hospital. The twister's other victim was Carol Dembkoski, 42, of Settler, Circle, Windsor, whose body was found near her home the day after the storm. She apparently died when her house was destroyed by the tornado. ZAK.

In Suffield. Robert J. Zak, 68, of 700 North Suf- field, husband of Sadie (Gould) Zak, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 1979, at his home. Born In Suffield, he had lived there all his life.

He was employed by Pratt 8, Whitney Aircraft Group of United Technologies Corp. of East Hartford as a foreman for 30 years. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs.

Linda A. Driver Killed, Passenger On Cycle Hurt WINSTED A 36-year-old Torrington man was killed Sunday when his motorcycle went out of control on RL 8 and slid under the wheels of an oncoming pickup truck, police said. died of head injuries shortly after the 5:30 p.m. accident, police -said. Franceschetti's unidentified woman passenger remained hospitalized with severe head injuries Sunday night at Winsted Memorial Hospital, where doctors were considering transferring her to Hartford Hospital or to John Dempsey Hospital, police said; Police said Franceschetti was southbound on Rt 800 when his motorcycle apparently skidded as it was coming around a curve near New Street Michael Youmatz, 37, of Colony Drive, said he stopped his pickup truck, which was approaching northbound on Rt. 800, when be saw the motorcycle go out of control and then saw the motorcycle go under his truck's right front wheel. Police said the motorcycle apparently was traveling at a nigh rate of speed when it went out of control and said the bike's seat was thrown 33 feet from the accident site.

Born in 1891 in West Acton, she was the daughter of Minerva (Tapley) and Will Charlton. She was married to William Henry Potter In 1911. They had two children, William Charlton Potter of Downers Grove, who died in 1978, and Stannard Murray Potter, who resides In Glastonbury. Vera Potter leaves seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her sister, Beatrice Cross lives in Claymont, Del.

The remains will be interred at Hlllcrest Cemetery In Springfield, Mass. There will be a memorial service Friday, Oct. 26, at the First Congregational Ch.urch chapel at Park Lathrop Streets, West Springfield where she was a member for many years. PRINDLE. In New Britain. Miriam A. Prlndle, 80, of 80 Gay Winsted, died Saturday (Oct. 20) at Walnut Hill Convalescent Hospital, New Britain.

She was the wife of the late Ernest Prlndle. She was born In Andover, Nov. 3, 1898, and was formerly employed 35 years by the Standard Cycle Co. of Winsted. She was a member of St.

James Episcopal Church, Winsted, and was past worthy matron of Magnolia Chapter OES. She leaves two sons, William Prlndle of Southington and Gordon Prlndle of Schaunburg, and nine grandchildren. In Springfield, Mass. Margaret (Hopkins) Wetherell, 76, of 422 S. Main Suffield, widow of Roland J. C. Wetherell, died Sunday, Oct.

21, 1979. Born In Minneapolis, she had lived In Suffield for the last 35 years. She was an active member of First Church of Christ Congregational, a member of the Suffield Garden Club, a member of the Suffield chapter of the Auxiliary for Child Services and a member of the AARP. She leaves a daughter, Susan Tener Osborn Goodwin; a Tener Osborn Goodwin; and a grandson, Mark Craven Goodwin, both of Suffield. 21) at Bristol Hospital. He was born June 8. 1895, In Europe, and was a son of the late John and Louise (Radun) Zabel. He had resided in Bristol the last 64 years and was employed at Bristol Brass Corp. for 34 years before retiring 19 years ago.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He Is survived by four sons, Oscar E. Zabel of Burlington, John G. Zabel of Farmlngton, Herbert E. Zabel of Wheaton, and George R.

Zabel of Bristol; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas L. Steed of Bristol; two stepsons, William Semrow of ST. ALBANS, W.Va. (AP) A man armed with a rifle burst into a small church Sunday and held 27 worshipers hostage for 2 hours before surrendering after reading an obscene statement over the radio, authorities said.

The gunman, who identified himself as a "fed-up" Vietnam veteran, gave himself up after he was allowed to broadcast a statement from the church over Charleston radio station WCHS. No one was injured. The man, identified by state police as Harold Mann, 31, was arraigned before Magistrate Carl Witbrow and charged with kidnapping. He was ordered held without bond. Kanawha County prosecutor James Roark said Mann was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center for BERTOLETTE.

In West Hartford. Katharine (Schweyer) Bertolette, 84, of 779 Prospect West Hartford, died at her home Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20) after a long illness. She was born in King of Prussia, Jan. 10, 1895, and had been a resident of West Hartford for more than 44 years.

She was the wife of the late Norman B. Bertolette, former head of the Hartford Gas Co. aod prominent civic leader and mother of the late Robert B. Bertolette. She attended Drexell College in Philadelphia, and was an active participant in social affairs and sports In the Hartford area.

She was a member of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Hartford Golf Club, Tuesday Afternoon Club and Oceanside Country Club of Ormond Beach, Fla. She is survived by a son, Reed Bertolette of Woodbury, seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be Wednesday 11 a.m. in the Gross Memorial Chapel of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church with the Rev. Peter Grande officiating.

In Hartford. Ora F. Ames, 66, of 17 Mafter Manchester, died Sunday morning (Oct. 21) at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Kathleen (Bar-barBw) Ames.

He was born in Harttord April 14, 1913, and had been a resident of Manchester since 1938. Before retiring, he was a foreman with the former Royal Typewriter Co. of Hartford, where he was employed for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Connecticut Horticultural Society. As a hobby, he operated a green house on Mather Street for many years.

Baldwin died Saturday (Oct. 20) at the Veterans Administration Hospital. She was born in Lackawanna, N.Y., and had resided in Hartford many years. She was employed by Security Insurance Co. for 14 years.

She was a Navy veteran of World War II. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, John.W. Baldwin III of Cobalt and Kenneth D. 21, at a local convalescent home. He was born In East Hartford and had resided In Westbrook. Prior to his retirement In 1972, he was a supervisor at the Connecticut Bank Trust Co. for 15 years. Before that he was vice president for Princess Theater Corp.

In Hartford. Michael P. Vendefte, 37, of 39 Downey Drive, Manchester, beloved husband of Barbara (Schlar) Vendefte, died Sunday (Oct. 21) at Hartford Hospital. Born in Hartford, he had lived Jn West Hartford before moving to Manchester several years ago.

He attended West Hartford schools and was a graduate of Conard High School In West Hartford. He had been employed as a foreman for 17 years with H.R. Porlss Paving Co. and more recently had been employed by the Dufford Construction Co. of Glastonbury.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael A. Vendette and a daughter, Nicole A. Vendette, both of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; his father, Michael Vendette of Fort Pierce, and a sister, Mrs. Patricia Kuzlanlk of North Willington.

Police said the gunman hved next to the church. Mann described himself as a Vietnam veteran who was "fed up with tie goddamn government" Mann entered the St Albans Church of Christ about 10:45 a.m., while the congregation was singing a hymn and demanded to talk to reporters, witnesses said. "He busted through the doors while we were singing.

He started screaming and cussing," said Carey White, a member of the congregation. About 45 persons were in the church when Mann entered the building. He allowed about 15 persons, including some children, to leave and ordered the others to remain. (UPI) Police Sunday arrested a 21-year-old woman in connection with the shooting death of her 48-year-old mother. Authorities said the two allegedly had been arguing about custody of the younger woman's child. Police Capt.

Floyd Powell said Cloie Ray, also known as Cloie Revels, was shot to death Friday in her sister's home on the city's north side. He said Mrs. Ray had been called to the home because the young woman was threatening to kill some relatives. Tension had been mounting in the family over whether the young woman's 2-year-old child should be placed in a foster home or remain with the family, Powell said. Mrs.

Ray had volunteered to take the child into her care, he said. Earlier this month, the young woman moved in with Mrs. Ray's sister. Friday, Powell said, the young woman and aunt began arguing and the young woman threatened to kill her aunt and other relatives. A Connecticut man was among the 38 U.S.

Marines who left Japan for Texas late Sunday to receive specialized treatment for severe burns they suffered in a freak fire at their base last Friday. Two Marines died in the fire. Cpl. John J. Jurgen, 22, son of William and Joann Jurgen of the Collinsville section of Canton, was listed in undetermined condition Sunday by a spokesman at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The spokesman said that the 38 Marines hadn't arrived at the burn center by late afternoon, but that he had been in radio contact with of icials on the Air Force hospital planes carrying the victims. Seventeen "very serious" and 21 "serious to very serious" cases were aboard the C-141 jets, bound for Brooke Army Medical Center. Two could not be taken because they were "too critical" to be moved, a military spokesman said. In all, 73 Marines and three Japanese received burns when winds and rains from Typhoon Tip damaged a rubber fuel container, and gasoline poured out, burst into flames and sent a river of fire through a Marine barracks area at the Mount Fuji base, 90 miles southwest of Tokyo. Sniper Kills Man, Woman In Oklahoma OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A sniper killed a man and a woman in a deliberate attack in the parking lot of a shopping center here Sunday afternoon, police said. Sgt Tom Mundy said the two unidentified victims had left a grocery store with their three children shortly before 5 p.m. and were walking toward their auto when someone opened fire with a high-powered rifle. Mundy said investigators believe the sniper fired at least five shots from his hiding place in some cedar trees on the north side of the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds across the street from the shopping center.

Car Accident Fatal to Man MIDDLETOWN John C. Costello of Daniels Road, East Haddam, was pronounced dead on arrival at Middlesex Memorial Hospital Sunday morning after an automobile accident, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police said Costello, 22, was driving northbound on Rt. 9A in Haddam at 3:30 a.m. Sunday when his car ran off the westerly shoulder and struck a rock on the enbank-ment.

The vehicle continued across the road and struck a guard rail before Costello was thrown from the vehicle, police said. They said the cause of the accident is being investigated. A passenger, Peter Dill, 20, of Beebe Road, East Haddam, was listed in satisfactory condition with multiple injuries at the hospital HILDING. In Wllllmantlc. Albert Wallace Hlldlng, 87, of Chestnut Hill Road, Hebron, died Sunday (Oct.

21) at Windham Community Memorial Hospital, Wllllmantlc. He was born Dec. 16, 1891 in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had been a resident of Hebron for more than 60 years. He served as a rural letter carrier for 34 years retiring in 1961. He was a member of First Congregational Church of Hebron for 63 years and served as clerk for 45 years, from 1926-1971.

He was on the Board of Trustees for the Douglas Library in Hebron and he served as secretary for several years. He was president of the St. Peter's Cemetery Association and secretary of the New Hebron Cemetery Association. He was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He served as secretary for the Inter-County Baseball League was a mem- ber of the Hebron Grange and the Goodwill Boys Club of Hebron.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel (Porter) Hilding of Hebron; a son, Hlldlng of Storrs; two daughters. Alberta Hilding of Hebron and Mrs. Edward Gerber of Southbury; five grandchildren; and a brother, Samuel Hilding of Hebron. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 2:30 p.m.

Man, 34, Found Wounded, Dies NEW HAVEN A 34-year-old man, found about 10:30 p.m. Saturday with a bullet wound in the head, died Sunday morning at the Hospital of St. Raphael here, police said. They said Victor Perez of 98 Howe St. was found in the first floor hallway of that residence by police responding to a call about a shooting.

Police said the death is being investigated..
