"You have to put it in perspective on how much money we can borrow and for what purpose," she said. "It comes down to dollars." Although Josheff did not speculate on the cost of removal or building a new dam, she mentioned a few other dam removals with price tags in the $35,000 range. Chilton spent $260,000 to rebuild its dam, she noted, but theirs is 33 feet wider than the Centerville Dam. The Citizen Dam Committee will meet next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

It would allow more testing of the dam, however in areas that weren't accessible before, she said. The Village Board will decide at next Tuesday's Village Board meeting whether to breach the dam according to DNR orders.

Residents presented a wide range of concerns at the meeting, ranging from a potential decline in property values to the loss of a historical asset should the dam be removed. Kathy Pearce, a member of the Citizen Dam Committee, said that no matter what happens, the village should use the area in some fashion, such as for a park. "It could still be a beautiful area," she said. "What our group is fearful of is just having a big ugly hole there." Village Board member Cheryl Kohl noted the dam's future may come down to whether money is available to build a new one, however. She noted the village will be building a new sewage treatment ard to people nearby or downstream if it washes out "The unknown is when and if it does breach, and what could happen at that point," she said.

"Water is going through the dam and under the dam," Josheff said, adding that most of the dam's piers were decayed and the concrete in the dam is weakening and has no reinforcing rebar. "That problem was always there, it just had not been seen," Josheff said, adding that she thinks a major portion of the dam is unrepairable. Josheff ordered the reservoir drawn down and a hole, or breach, made in the dam to prevent water from rising again. The pond was drawn down on Oct. 7, but has not yet been breached.

The village has until June to decide whether to remove the dam or replace it with a new one. Some 30 people attended a public information meeting on the dam at Lakeshore Technical Institute Wednesday night. Among them were several members of the Citizen Dam Committee, which formed shortly after the dam was declared a hazard by the Department of Natural Resources earlier this fall. Extensive damage to the dam was found when crews began dismantling parts of the dam this fall to repair damage found during a 1988 DNR inspection.

The dam was originally built in the mid to late 1800s, but is known to have washed out in 1924 and 1942. Sue Josheff, a DNR dam safety engineer, told the group that the dam is a potential haz yrL vf I 'I LTC police students to probe 'murders' of Milwaukee Police Department, will assist the students in processing the items of evidence. Doyle was picked in the final vote over Herzfeldt. He will begin his duties immediately, with board committee meetings Tuesday. Kerry Doyle, 1019 Humboldt was appointed Tuesday night by the board to fill out the unexpired term of Kenneth Wendt, who resigned several weeks ago. Doyle was among nine people who interviewed for the position during a special board meeting Wednesday night. A father of five, Doyle is the sales manager for the custom metal division of Metko Inc. While he said he had not been a good student in school or during two failed attempts at college, his life turned around in 1986 when he enrolled at Lakeland College. There, professors found he had a reading problem and worked with him to overcome the deficiency.

Although he was working full-time, and going to school full-time, Doyle graduated magna cum laude in 1989 with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. "(Teachers today) know a lot more of how to get people from point A to point in education," he said. Doyle said he has no specific issues he wants to address immediately. He did say kids need to have a better understanding of economics. "My kids don't know how capitalism works, how money is made," he said.
