Velvet Invades Yule Scene HELEN HENNESSY Women's Editor YORK (NEA) After big fling in Paris fall fashion collections, velvet comes home for the holidays. For parties, dances and athome entertaining it will add its luxurious richness to every festive scene. This year black velvet takes second place to jewel tones and floral colors. And this switch to color is made palatable because the objectionable sheen has been removed from the tabric. A new matte velvet with closely loomed surface eliminates the sheen which once made anything but black velvet look too "shiny new." The new boulevard velvets back their loveliness with practicality this year.

They require minimum of upkeep. Just hang them over a steaming tub for half hour. When they are dry, an upward brushing will restore their soft luster. The velvet dress and jacket costume joins the understated theater suit to give any holiday wardrobe an assured look of elegance. Formal gowns in serene, uncomplicated lines give full play to the fabric's fluid grace.

The velvet coat sweeps into the scene in majestic full length columns and short swirling tent shapes. And for at-home wear there is something in velvet to match mood. You can play "real" mother, the siren, the great lady, the breezy activator or the easy-going loll-about. This holiday season velvet will cater to every feminine whim and fancy. And although it looks expensive, American designers have produced it at tempting prices to fit every budget.
