STANDARD SHOCKS New boat isn't necessarily safe A boat is not necessarily safe just because it is new and shiny, Don Malmberg, boat safety officer for the Montana Department of Fish and Game, warned boating enthusiasts. Tests by the U.S. Coast Guard show shortcomings in a large percentage of boats leaving factories, he said. During 1976 the Coast Guard purchased 72 boats from various manufacturers for testing and 47 per cent of the tested boats failed to comply with safety standards.

Overpowering and erroneous specifications for weight capacity were cited in most cases. Malmberg also noted that 97,000 units were ordered recalled for correction of defects last year. Malmberg said that the standards that apply to commercially manufactured boats should be followed by backyard builders. But from the statistics he quotes above, perhaps the backyard boat builder would do well to upgrade the standards. Free booklets for home boat-builders are available from the Department of Fish and Game in Helena.
