"What we call ourselves and we're hard to define is melodic groove. It's bass, drums and vocals.

It kind of sounds like it's going to be a groovy rock band, but it's not. It's kind of jazzy, funky," says Kohrt. Members of Spooncat! will likely sit in with Too Much Pop this weekend, and Too Much Pop will open for Spooncat! June 13 at the Pomp Room. Other confirmed gigs: Java-N-More, Wednesday night; Theo's, June 20-21 Sioux Falls Brewing July 17. Others will be added.

The band Kris Andrews and Michael Hogan are the other two members is touring the region throughout the summer, with shows scheduled in Colorado, Nebraska and Minnesota. This is the group's first tour outside of the San Diego area. The band has released one CD on its Get ready for Too Much Pop. The San Diego trio will be in Sioux Falls for most of June, as lead singer Kendra Kohrt returns to her roots to visit family and friends. "My family is from Sioux Falls," says Kohrt, 21.

"My mom was born and raised there, and although I've never lived in Sioux Falls I've been there twice a year for every year of my life." The band has a series of shows scheduled throughout June and July, including performances from 8 to 1 1 p.m. Friday and 9 to mid- Kendra Kohrt's mother was raised in Sioux Falls. Kohrt will perform here with her band from San Diego. about six months. Most people look at the band and thing we do ska, but it's not ska at all.

It's power jazz. It's a combination of We've got something for every dad at Sears. own Sugaliscious Music label. A trio of cool shows Three shows of note: Country singer Theea Daniels sings at 9 tonight at Champps. Her live shows have drawn raves lately.

Scotty Spenner does a solo acoustic blues show from 8:30 p.m. to midnight today at the Sioux Falls Brewing Co. Spenner and his band, the Big Tones, recently won the top prize at the Iowa Blues Challenge. The Beatifies open for Violet on Saturday at the Pomp Room. The Minneapolis quartet has gotten lots of mileage out of its first CD, "How I Learned to Stop Worrying." The sound is somewhere akin the Beatles meet the Byrds pure pop for the sheer fun of it.

And we all know how cool Violet is with or without Mark Bom-bara. Music notes The nine-piece Sioux Falls-Brookings band Trend 86 hosts an all-age benefit show from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Terrace Park Bandshell. Bynomeans also will play. FloodFest '97 is free, but donations will be collected and handed over to the Red Cross to help flood victims in Grand Forks, N.D.

The show provides an opportunity to check out Trend 86, one of the more interesting new bands in the region. "We've got three horn players, and most of the guys are from Brookings," says band member Steve Schmidt, 19, of Brandon. "We've been together HPS that and Latin music." The Mountain Goats are coming. The Austin, Texas, rock outfit is scheduled at Zandbroz Variety on June 28. Simon Joyner of Omaha opens the show.

Funniest flyer of the week award goes to Flood Romeo. The Sioux Falls rock band has issued its monthly newsletter. The Flood Gate. Particularly humorous was guitarist Dan Anderson's Tip O' the Month: "Clapton and Van Halen use the guitar headstock to hold cigarettes. I say, why stop there? A guitar can be used to conveniently hold many items while playing, for instance a toothbrush, a good book, or my favorite, tasty McDonalds french fries.

Yum." Skitzo's, the roadhouse east of Sioux Falls, is running bands again. Soul Access plays outdoors at 8 p.m. Saturday. Several years ago, Skitzo's scheduled regular outdoor shows, including several national acts. But the bar changed owners.

When Mike and Jody McBeth took it over again they owned the place when it booked bands regularly they decided to try live music. "We've had so many people demanding we do them again, so we're going to do a couple of concerts this year," says Jody McBeth. Bob Keyes covers entertainment for the Argus Leader.
