She also withstood the loss of her job while giving birth to her second son. Reid just refused to let anything get her down, family members said. "She was determined," said her father, Owen Yunker of Wentworth. Reid died Tuesday, July 3, 1996, in Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls. She was 30.

Reid, an active teen-ager who enjoyed playing basketball, first learned she had cancer in March 1982, shortly before her 16th birthday. Doctors wanted to amputate a leg, but her dad stood firm. "I wouldn't let them," he said. Her leg was stiff for the rest of her life, but she kept it and her independence. She refused to use handicapped parking and climbed stairs.

"She had to believe she was a whole person so she had to act like one," said her mother, JoAnn Yunker of Madison. Her recovery kept her from completing high school, but she earned a GED and then attended the University of South Dakota, where she earned a bachelor's degree in social work and psychology in 1989. "She graduated cum laude," her mother said. "She was determined to be able to be on her own," her father said. On June 5, 1992, she married Greg Reid in Madison.

They lived in Seattle and Springfield, before returning to South Dakota. Reid worked as a social worker for the state, specializing in handicapped and disabled children and adults before she moved to the food-stamp The loss of her job while in the maternity ward is noteworthy, her husband said. "This is an interesting story," he said. "She was having Christian when her supervisor came in and fired her. It was Jank-low's cuts." Undaunted, she focused on her growing family.

She had two sons, Joshua and Christian, to care for, and her family to be with. "She was very family-oriented," JoAnn Yunker said. "Her two boys, her husband, brothers and sister." Greg Reid agreed. "Taking care of her boys, being a mother. That was her world.

Family." She learned she again had been attacked by cancer -unrelated to the first one in May. Her father remembers her surprise and anger. "For 14 years she got along," he said. "Then she said, 'Why, right before my 30th birthday, do I come back and have cancer But it was her resilience and quiet good humor that her family will recall. Kelly J.

Reid was born March 4, 1966, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Owen and JoAnn Ferlick Yunker. She attended school in Colman and Madison. She lived in Brookings and attended Holy Life Tabernacle in Brookings. In addition to her father, mother, husband and sons, survivors include two brothers, Scott and Shane Yunker of Seattle; and one sister, Erin Yunker of Madison. Funeral services are 3 p.m.
