Mr.

Lacey made an electric-eye potato cutter to use during harvest, said his daughter, Lois Brown of Sioux Falls. The device measured the potatoes and decided how many knives came out to cut the potato. He also created a machine that bagged and weighed the potatoes. A light came on when there was 10 pounds in the bag, Mrs. Brown said.

"He was really something. All his ideas came from a need to handle things easier or to save time," she said. Edward Henry Lacey, 86, a retired farmer, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Dell Rapids Hospital, after a long illness. He had been a resident of Odd Fellows Nursing Home in Dell Rapids.

Mr. Lacey decided after the eighth grade that he wanted to work full time with his father on their potato farm. He was 14 when his father turned over management of the farm to him. Mrs. Brown said her father was a self-educated man who read every book and magazine he could get his hands on.

A cousin who was trained as an engineer sent Mr. Lacey all of his used books. "He read every inch of those books. One time, my father called home and had me look up something for him in his engineering book. He knew exactly where a particular chart was located.

He had a fantastic ability to use information he found in a book," Mrs. Brown said. She said one of her father's inventions that is used widely 25, 1934.
