4-A Great Falls Tribune Tuewtlay. September 3. 1 983 Cambodia's Pol Pot retires National Liberation Front against the pro-Vietnam government. The coali- tion, led by Sihanouk, is recognized by the United Nations as the legitimate government of Cambodia. "This is very significant news," said one Western diplomat in Peking.

"It's a success for Chinese diplomacy," he said, suggesting that Peking had sought a way to ease Pol Pot out of the limelight so Vietnam would come under more international pressure to begin negotiations with the coalition. "Son Sen would definitely be more acceptable to the international community," the envoy said. Sihanouk has called for a international conference on the Cambodia conflict, and for free elections involving all parties. The Khmer Rouge said in July it would accept Heng Samrin supporters as partners in a future government, and promised it would accept defeat if it lost free elections. PEKING (AP) Pol Pot has retired as military commander of communist Khmer Rouge guerrillas, one of three groups fighting Vietnamese soldiers and the Vietnam-backed government in Cambodia, the embassy of the Cambodian resistance said.

Foreign diplomats said the announcement could advance prospects for talks on ending the conflict between three guerrilla groups and the Cambodian government. Pol Pot ruled Cambodia from 1975-79, when the Khmer Rouge killed more than a million people. They were driven out of power by Vietnamese soldiers who installed the government of Heng Samrin. Mak Ben, a Peking embassy official for the Cambodian resistance told The Associated Press that Pol Pot retired Aug. 24, but will remain inside Cambodia as head of a military academy for Khmer Rouge officers and cadres.

Ben, and the Khmer Rouge radio, monitored in Bangkok said Pol Pot retired because of a new Khmer Rouge rule requiring civilian and military leaders to retire at 60. Ben said Pol Pot is 63 or 64 years old. Vietnam has demanded the ouster of Pol Pot and his deputy Ieng Sary before considering talks involving the Khmer Rouge. There was no mention of Ieng Sary in today's announcement. Pol Pot's successor is Son Sen, who also becomes vice president of the Democratic Kampuchea Party under Khieu Samphan.

There was no immediate reaction from China, Vietnam or the Heng Samrin government. Peking backed the Pol Pot regime and is the principal supplier of arms to the estimated 50,000 Khmer Rouge guerrillas. The Khmer Rouge has joined with a resistance group loyal to Cambodia's former ruler, Prince Norodom Sihanouk, and the Khmer People's "OH' mm Eyes AND SO IS KOOZ FM!
