Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, S.D. Thursday, April 27, 1989 5B Sports lolfers share lead at Las Vegas tournament r- Leader board LAS VEGAS INVITATIONAL Round 33- 32-65 -7 34- 31-65 -7 LAS VEGAS (AP) Hale Irwin dropped a 40-foot eagle putt on the final hole Wednesday to earn a share of the first-round lead in the Las Vegas Invitational golf tournament. Irwin's 18th-hole heroics completed a 7-under-par 65 and lifted him into a tie for the lead with Billy Glasson, Gene Sauers and Mike Miles. Miles is making his second try on the PGA Tour. "The best I've ever played," said Miles, who competed on the mini-tours for two years after losing his tour playing rights for lack of performance in 1986.

Sauers, a winner at Hawaii earlier this year, Irwin and Miles all played at Spanish Trail, one of three desert resort courses used for the first three rounds of this 90-hole chase for a $225,000 first prize. The five-day event features a total purse of $1.25 million. Glasson, who won at Doral in February, had his 7-under-par effort at the Las Vegas Country Club. The 44-year-old Irwin said he hasn't been playing particularly well, wasn't managing himself or his game particularly well "and just decided to try to keep it as simple as possible." By that, he explained, he meant going for the middle of the greens David People, Chris Perry, David Canipe, Mark O'Meara and South African Fulton Allem. Mediate, Purtzer, Pate, Peoples and Perry played at Spanish Trail.

Allem, O'Meara and Canipe were at Las Vegas Country Club. Of those leaders, only Sauers and Glasson played in the more difficult afternoon conditions. John Mahaffey and Tony Sills, at 67, had the best rounds at the tight shorter Desert Inn course. Defending champion Gary Koch had a 73 at the Desert Inn. Curt Byrum, a native of Onida, S.D., shot a 4-under-par 68.

His brother, Tom, shot a 2-over-par 74. of the par-5s in two and didn't even come close to making a bogey. "I'm very happy," he said after finishing in the calm conditions of the morning. "We caught a pretty good day. It was not as windy as it has been or will be." But the conditions changed dramatically in the afternoon.

Winds increased, temperatures dropped and some rare, desert showers developed. "It was windy and pretty cold the last couple of hours," said Sauers, who finished in a drizzly rain late in the afternoon. Ryan Folsom, sophomore Jason Miller, freshman Josh Lien and all-state hockey player Jeff Gross are tops in sprints. Dale Sun-derman is a veteran in the middle distances. Pat Castle was second in the 1,600 at the Dan Lennon. Freshman James Ramesbothom, a transfer from Minneapolis, will help in distance events. He was third in last fall's state Class AA cross-country meet.

Senior Matt Metli and juniors Wade Geraets and Scott Hunter compete in shot put and discus. Hunter may also run the 800. BRANDON VALLEY Mitch Jurgens leads a strong group of hurdlers, Coach Bill Henjum said. Jurgens will compete in the highs and intermediates. Todd We-trosky is a high hurdles specialist.

He tied a school record in the high jump earlier this year, 6-6. Sprinters are Broc Halseth, Tom Gerwer, Monte Johanning, Nate Walker, sophomore Kevin Keil, Casey Rasmussen, Jeremy Skiles, Chad Olson, and Corby Serk. Chris Terveer competes in two middle-distance events, the 400 and 800. Dave Kramer competes in middle-distance events, intermediate hurdles and triple jump. Tom Pickering, Jason Wilmot and Mark Nesheim are long-distance specialists.

Pickering was fourth in the state Class AA cross-country meet last fall. Rick Wanderscheid competes in the shot put, long jump and triple jump. Junior Jason Larson has thrown the shot put 49-0 indoors this year. Corey Moeller, another shot putter, is the team's best in discus. Sophomore Jason Klein also throws the discus.

Jason Doescher was a state meet-qualifier in the high jump last year. Freshman Dave Gjovik has reached 11-6 in the pole vault. SIOUX FALLS CHRISTIAN Sophomore Chad Osgood has placed in every meet this year in the 800 or 1,600 for Coach Dave Melemseter. Senior Tony Boer competes in the 400 and 800. Sophomore Rob Elgersma competes in the 300 hurdles and 400.

Melemseter said senior Kendall Van Peursem would have been the top point-scorer in meets for the Chargers, in the long jump, triple jump and 400. But he is out for the season with a back injury. By PAT DUNCAN Argus Leader Staff Coach Jeff Lukens is plotting a way for the Washington Warriors win another boys state track title. "We lack some depth, but we've got some tricks up our sleeve," he said. "We redshirted (Chad) Anderson, (John) Legel, (Phil) Biteler and (Darrin) Fox." The Warriors are in a joking mood even though the nucleus of the team that tied Rapid City Stevens for last year's title has graduated.

Some important members return, including Neil Matthiesen. "He's our animal," Lukens said. Matthiesen anchored the state-champion 800-meter relay team that set an all-time state mark last year with a time of 1 minute, 28.89 seconds. He was on the second-place 400 relay team. It was the 1,600 relay, the last event of the meet, that clinched a tie for Washington.

"I didn't think we were going to be that great in the 1,600," Matthiesen said. "Stevens had all their runners back and had won it before." The Raiders won it again, as they had to. Washington needed to finish sixth to tie, fifth or better to win. Grant Tschetter's lunging finish gave the Warriors sixth. "At first I thought we got seventh, but Tschetter came back.

It was a relief to tie," Matthiesen said. A football and baseball player, and basketball cheerleader, Matthiesen has a 3.65 grade-point average. The honor-athlete candidate is considering Creighton University for baseball, but said he has not made a decision. Matthiesen's decisions in track are far less crucial but just as varied. His choices of events to compete in this spring include the 100, 200, several relays, maybe the long jump, and the 400.

The 100, where Matthiesen has run a 10.9, may be his best event. Tschetter will compete in the 200 and 400, Lukens said. He is coming off a stress fracture of the shin in football. Pat O'Donnell, a member of the 400 and 800 relay teams last year, has remained on the football injury list from last fall and will not compete. Brad Dirks is one of the state's best in field events.

He won the shot put (51' feet, 8V4 inches) and was second in discus (150-0) in last year's state meet. The Warriors can go the distance with Joel Pierstorff in the 800 and Fat Tire Bikes hard to fire them up. They have a lot of incentive. Neil Matthiesen We don't talk about the state title too much, but it's in the back of our minds. Our team pride is better than in quite a while." LINCOLN Sprinter Scott Ingvoldstad and hurdler Tom Taylor lead a Lincoln team that is deep in the short run.

Taylor was first in the 300 hurdles (39.27) at last year's state meet and third in the 200, which was won by Ingvoldstad in 23.04. Ingvoldstad was third in the 100. Senior Steve Conzet is a sprinter and long jumper, all-state 'basketball player Scott Beckstrand will compete in the high jump and 1,600 relay, and brother Mark Beck-strand competes in the long jump and short sprints. He set a Lincoln indoor school record in the long jump at 21-102 at the Dan Lennon Invitational. He was fourth at last year's state meet.

Sprinters also include Trevor Risch and Steve Dierks. Dierks also competes in the shot put. "Our throwers are improving, but we're not at the caliber that we can expect points from them statewide," Coach Rich Greeno said. Brian Squillace is a long sprinter and competes in both hurdles. Middle and long distance runners include Keo Phrommany, Scott Squillace, Marty Lusk, Kevin Evans, and Tim and Mark Vetter.

O'GORMAN The Knights boast four athletes who can leap farther than 20 feet. The list includes Aaron Ferrie, who was a state-meet qualifier last year in the long jump and 400; and football quarterbacks who are track newcomers, Chad McConnell and Scott Bickett. McConnell, also a baseball and basketball standout, is expected to compete in the 400 relay as well. The fourth member of the long jump club is Ryan Good, a transfer who has also been over 40 feet in the triple jump this spring. "We're still experimenting," Coach Doug Lindner said.

"I just hope I can have the same feeling I had last year by topping what I did." Vande Hoef, who signed with Iowa State University last week, has jumped twice this spring and cleared 6-10 both times. He said he's confident of topping 7 feet in Friday's competition at Drake Three other 1988 high school champions will return to defend their titles Brent Roth of Iowa City High in the 400 hurdles, Lance Elliott of Montezuma in the 1,600 and Christa Holms of West Des Moines Valley in the 800. Waterloo West sprinter Bryant Williams also is back, hoping to reclaim the title in the 100. He won as a sophomore in 1987, but was second to Muscatine's Kevin Monroe last year. Williams turned the tables on Monroe by winning at the 4A state meet in May.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) As usual, Darwin VandeHoef will be a busy young man this weekend. The Rock Valley, senior, one of the state's more versatile track athletes, will compete in four events in the high school division of the 80th Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday. VandeHoef is favored to repeat his title in the high jump and will contend for championships in the 110-and 400-meter hurdles. He'll also compete in the long jump. Last year, VandeHoef became the second athlete in Iowa high school history to go 7 feet in the high jump when he cleared 7-1 at Drake.

His best is 7-2 at the International Prep Invitational in Elmhurst, 111., last June. "Drake Stadium is about my favorite place to jump," said VandeHoef, who also has won two Class CUSTOM FIT ASSEMBLE: Every Schwinn is assembled ready to ride.
