Great Falls Tribune Monday, Dec. 13, 1965 Dear It's a Trying Time! Abigail Van Buren drive-in for sandwiches. Don't get the idea we didn't appreciate folks sending in what they did, but at a time like that we would have appreciated some meat and potatoes a lot more. HAPPENED TO ME DEAR HAPPENED: Only if someone assumes the responsibility of taking charge of the food (a dubious honor for which few will volunteer), can this problem be solved. naturally bring whatever he finds easiest to prepare and within his budget. If one inquires, "What shall I bring?" suggestions can be made. Otherwise, the recipients should accept graciously whatever is brought and provide whatever is needed, but lacking, themselves. DEAR ABBY: I am sure that "CONFIDENTIAL TO PERPLEXED" was meant for me. Someone apparently wrote and asked if sending gifts with the price tags and sales slips enclosed was a "new-fangled custom" and if it was proper.

Your answer to both questions was a flat NO! I don't ordinarily send my gifts that way, Abby, but I have a niece who has exchanged every gift I have ever sent her, SO why should I bother to giftwrap them? The price is no secret because when she goest to exchange the gift, she finds out how much I paid for it anyway. If she's offended, it's just too bad. Don't ask me why I continue to send her gifts. I feel compelled to because her mother was so good to me, but that's another story. Since you printed her complaint, I hope you will print my explanation.

NO GIFT-WRAPPING DEAR NO: Since you feel "compelled" to give your niece gifts, why don't you save your energy and send her a gift certificate? Troubled? Write to ABBY. Box 69700, Los Angeles, Calif. For a personal reply, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope. For Abby's booklet. "How to Have a Lovely Wedding," send 50 cents to Abby, Box 69700, Los Angeles, Calif.

Homesick for California, she went to her hotel room, slipped on a robe and picked up the telephone to call the children: Rosemary, Louise, Colleen, Nicky, Thomas, Susan, Janette, Mary, Germaine, Jean, Veronica, Phillip, Gerald, Joseph, Teresa, Joan and Helen. It was to promote her book, "Who Gets the Drumstick?" that she visited Philadelphia and New York recently. Five years ago Helen Beardsley was heartbroken and saddened, a widow with eight young children. Then came fate, a handsome Irishman named Frank, a widower with 10 children of his own. Their wedding combining families of 18 children was something of a nationwide fairy tale.

Since, the Beardsleys have had two more babies of their own, and three older boys have left for college and the Marines. She squelches critics. What goes for one, goes for all. That way, a child is never alone in anything. He doesn't feel picked on or singled out. "When I say to children underfoot, 'let's the children think, 'she means not 'she means "We have problems and we have spats among the children, but we can honestly say they don't fight. "They're normal.

We have lazy ones and eager ones. They are all different. The mood of our home changes as each grows." The Beardsleys run an organized home in Carmel, where teams of children take part in the cooking, cleaning, gardening, and entertaining. "Team A washes the dishes on Monday and Team does it on Tuesday, and so on," says their pretty mother. "I check over the house after they've all left for school.

"I keep a paper in my apron and write notes if someone left soiled socks on the floor or a skirt on a chair. At the end of the day, I remind them. "Our children are no different from anyone else's. Hand Care for Kids -Gebhart photo NEW YORK (UPI) A little pre-play care can keep children's hands from getting rough and grimy, the Cleanliness Bureau suggests. Before sandpile or mudpie time, teach the youngsters the trick of scraping their nails over a bar of soap to get a layer under the tips. This will keep the dirt from staining.

Then, at bathtime, scrub the nails gently with a very soft brush dipped in soapy water. Tops at Bridge UNIT COMMITTEE 5.930; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Section -Roger SwansonMrs. L.

While the United States so far has poured 165.000 troops into the anti-Communist fight, it has assigned only 176 women -most of them nurses--to duty with military forces in Viet Nam.

And Defense Department figures showed Monday that even in the time honored profession of wartime nursing, some services are experimenting with male nurses There are only 11 women in uniform in Viet Nam today, and all are members of the Women's Army Corps (WAC). There are no Air Force WAFS. Navy WAVES or women Marines there. Why? A WAC spokesman said the reason simply is that there is little need for them.
