Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, S.D. Monday, March 15, 1993 Sports People Prost wins Grand Prix Alain Prost of France returned from Prost, driving a new Williams Renault FW15, passed Senna on an S-curve in lap 24 and never trailed again in the 72-lap race on the 2.64-mile Kyalami track north of Johannesburg. "It was a difficult race. I made a bad start," said Prost, adding that he felt he had recovered from his long absence from the ciruit. "I really feel well and much better than three years ago.

I'm very confident about the team, and they look even more and more confident about me." Prost lapped everyone in the field except Senna, who finished 1 minute, 19.824 seconds behind in his new McLaren MP4-8. Prost received 10 points for his first-place finish, while Senna gained six. Mark Blundell of Britain was third in a Ligier, capturing four points. Christian FitUpaldl of Brazil was fourth in his Minardi, winning three and J.J. Lento of Finland was fifth in his Sauber, gaining two.

Carbajal delivers KO Michael Carbajal weighs 107 pounds. Saturday night, he was a giant And he had to be to beat Humberto Gonzalez in a seven-round war that had a crowd of about 6,400 at the Las Vegas Hilton Center screaming themselves hoarse from the opening bell to the wild finale. Carbajal had been knocked down twice by Gonzalez, 107J2, and appeared to be on the verge of losing his light flyweight title. Then, Carbajal hurt Gonzalez badly about midway through the seventh round and then knocked him out with a right and left hook to the head with one second remaining in the round. "I wasn't worried," Carbajal said.

"I was confident. I got knocked down twice but I knew he couldn't knock me out. "I'm a real champion. I get up. I knock him down." As referee Mills Lane counted out Gonzalez, Carbajal stomped his foot in triumph and then shouted at the top of, his lungs when his victory became official.

"I caught him with the hook," he said, "and I said, 'Bye-bye. Good night." Carbajal not only kept his IBF share of the 108-pound title. He also won the WBC championship. The fight followed an impresive performance by Oscar de la Hoya, the only U.S. boxing gold medal winner at the 1992 Olympics.

De la Hoya was supposed to go to school for eight rounds but he dismissed class early, knocking down veteran Jeff Mayweather with a left hook to the head and stopping him at 1:35 of the fourth round. Women's pairings set Defending champion Stanford, top-ranked Vanderbilt, Ohio State and Ten nessee drew No. 1 seeds Sunday in the NCAA Division 1 women's basketball tournament. Tennessee, 27-2, and Louisiana Tech, 23-5, each is making its 12th straight appearance in the tournament. Stanford was seeded No.

1 in the West regional. Tennessee, which has split the last four campionships with Stanford, was made No. 1 seed in the Mideast Regional. The Lady Vols were made an at-large entry when Vanderbilt won the SEC automatic bid. This may be the NCAA Women's last 48-team tournament.

It is expected to expand to 64 teams next year. Trivia answer Indiana defeated Syracuse 74-73 in 1987 for the NCAA men's basketball title, the last time the Final Four was played in New Orleans. Compiled from wire reports by Dana Yost a year-long sabbatical in top form, winning the South African Grand Prix on Sunday in Kyalami, South Africa. The race was the opener for the 1993 Formula One circuit. Prost, who sat out last season after being fired by Ferrari, lost his pole po Alain Prost sition to rival Aryton Senna in the first corner of the race, which was run in pouring rain and finished by just five of the 26 starters.
