Great Falls Tribune SPORTS Saturday, June 30, 1990 Helena owner would consider shift to Missoula wm MM By The Associated Press HELENA The Helena Brewers would consider moving to Missoula if problems with the Pioneer League baseball team's aging ballpark here are not addressed before next year, a newspaper reported Friday. The Brewers will continue to play ball at Kindrick Legion Field for the 1990 season, but team owner Rene Boisvert met with Missoula Mayor Dan Kemmis about six weeks ago to discuss what it would take to move the team to that city, Helena's Independent Record reported in a Page One story. "I'm not moving the team to Missoula," Boisvert told tjie newspaper. "I spoke to Kemmis when I was struggling with the City of Helena in negotiating a lease (for use of the ballpark). I told him I was committed to Helena, and wanted it to work out, but there was a chance that it might not.

"As a prudent businessman, I'm seeing what options are available," Boisvert said. At about the same time as that meeting, a task force of private citizens and public officials in Missoula organized to investigate acquiring and maintaining a minor league franchise, but Kemmis said the two events are unrelated. "In my conversation with Rene, there was no attempt made by me in any way to recruit the Brewers," the Missoula mayor said. 'We're not interested in any way in enticing the Brewers out of Helena. "Rene knew about Missoula's interest in acquiring a team, and felt he should find out the situation here in case it didn't work out to stay in Helena," Kemmis said.

Boisvert said he was not trying to play one municipality off the other, and had no intention of doing so in the future. He signed the contract offered by the city of Helena for use of Kindrick Legion Field this year, but he Sports briefs A digest of local and regional stories Lady Griz bid Jar NCAA Western Region ah MISSOULA (AP) The University of Montana said Friday it has submitted bids for the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Western Regional Championships in 1992 and 1993. The women's NCAA Basketball Committee will meet July 1-5 to chose sites for the 1992 tournaments, as well as some In 1993. The committee's recommendations must be approved by the NCAA's Executive Committee, and final sites will be announced in late July or early August Dates for the Western Regional Championships, featuring four of the final 16 teams in the women's NCAA tournaments, will be March 26-28 in 1992 and March 25-27 in 1993. This is the first time Montana has submitted a bid for a regional championship.

Montana has been among the Division I leaders in attendance at women's games, averaging 3,152 per game last season when the Lady Grizzlies won the Big Sky Conference title for the sixth time in the past eight years to advance to the NCAA tournament. Montana's associate athletic director, Kathy Noble, said the University of Washington also is expected to bid for the 1992 Western Regional tournament. "It will be a tremendous amount of work if we continue to host the Big Sky Conference tournaments and the NCAA first-or second-round games, as we have the past three years," she said. "But I think Missoula is ready to support women's basketball at this level." TruvUHon not surprised with draft snub BILLINGS (AP) Former Eastern Montana College basketball standout Troy Truvillion wasn't surprised that he was passed over in Wednesday's NBA draft. "I'm a little disappointed but I'm not worried about it," Truvillion said.

"Once it got past the 40th pick I was concerned about going to the right team." Truvillion said he was concerned about being selected by a team that had an abundance of guards. Truvillion will try to make the league via the free agent route. He said he has received invitations from Philadelphia and Washington. He said Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers also have shown some interest. Truvillion, who hopes to make the NBA as a point guard, said he believes Philadelphia may be his best bet.

Three athletes achieved perfect 4.0 grade-point averages: sophomore Tonia Bauer, a volleyball player from Kenyon, senior Shelly Collins, a track athlete from Bozeman; and junior Michelle Cutler, a tennis player from Bozeman. "Over 65 percent of our athletes achieved a 3.0 or better this year," said athletic director Ginny Hunt.

Bobcats sign pair of track athletes BOZEMAN (AP) Two women's track athletes have signed national letters of intent to attend Montana State University, track coach Dale Kennedy announced. Wendy Clymore, a junior college transfer from Ricks College in Oregon, and Julie Renfro, a senior at Mazana High School in Klamath Falls, will compete for the Bobcats next fall, Kennedy said. Clymore is a multiple event performer in the jumping events. She finished second in the junior college national meet this spring in the high jump and holds the Ricks College record at 5 feet, 934 inches. She also competes in the triple jump and long jump.

Renfro competed in the 400-, 800- and events this spring at the prep level, placing second in the state meet in the 400 with a time of 2:14.41. She also will compete in cross country at MSU. "Like any businessman, I want the best possible environment for my business, and I don't have that here," said Boisvert. "What's missing is a landlord who will work with the tenant to offer a safe, accommodating, functional facility.

Boisvert said he would rate Helena's stadium a C-minus, and that he is looking for at least a B-plus facility. Since January, Boisvert said he has poured $20,000 of the Brewer organization's money into repairing the aging structure, including rewiring, rebuilding seats and painting. The city spent $3,000 to install netting and blockade the area beneath the bleachers. One of his major concerns is that the Milwaukee Brewer organization could pull its player development contract worth about $150,000 to the local team if the ballpark does not meet its standards. "You can't put Band-aids on Kindrick Legion Field and have it acceptable to use five years from now," Boisvert said.

"If the city doesn't have a workable plan in the foreseeable future to make it safe, comfortable and functional for fans and players, any business will look for alternatives." batted in, plating Ingram with a grounder in the third inning and drving home Blackwell with a single in the eighth. "There are a lot of possibilities from top to bottom in the order," Vavra said. Unlike their last two outings, when they had to rally in the late innings, the Dodgers jumped on Helena Friday early and then coasted to victory. They broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, scoring two runs, and increased the margin to 4-0 with a two-run fifth. After Helena broke up the shut out in the seventh, the Dodgers added three runs on five hits in the eighth. "We did a lot of things well. We put it all together," manager Joe Vavra said.

"We're playing together as a team. The chemistry is right. Everybody has a positive, heads-up attitude. The guys are going out to have fun and do a good job." Baumann did a "heck of a job," according to pitching coach Guy Conti, retiring all but three of 18 batters in recording his first victory as a professional. Vince Castaldo doubled in the first inning and Tim Carter later walked, but Baumann got out of the jam when he struck out Juan Flores.

The Brewers didn't reach base again until the fourth, when Flores singled with two outs. Baumann set Helena down in order in the fifth inning, his last of the game. "(Baumann) picked us up. We were hoping for four innings, and he gave us five," Conti said. "He pitched well.

He earned another chance (for a start)." Mike Mimbs pitched the next 1 innings, allowing one run on one hit before giving way to Gordon Tipton with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh. On his first pitch, Tipton got Tony Coble to ground out. Tipton allowed two harmless hits in the final two frames and earned his first save of the season.
