THE BASEBALL PAGE Great Falls Tribune 3C Friday, June 15, 1990 No. 1 pick Ron assigned to Great Falls By SCOTT MANSCH Tribune Sports Writer Ron Walden, the Los Angeles organization's first-round draft choice, will be a Great Falls Dodger this summer. And so will first baseman Mike Busch, a fourth-round pick out of Iowa State who was so accomplished in football that he was a lOth-round selection of the Tampa Bay Buccanneers in last April's National Football League draft. The Dodgers organization has its rookies and other selected players at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, this week, determining how to split up the talent. The Dodgers have short-season Rookie teams in Great Falls (Pioneer League), Yakima (Northwest) and Kissimmee (Gulf Coast).

Great Falls manager Joe Vavra said Thursday from Vero Beach that he is impressed by the quality of athletes he will be entrusted with this summer. "We're going to be a tad bit younger than we were last year, in terms of experience," Vavra said. "But I think we'll be about even in the talent scale." Vavra was Pioneer Manager of the Year last summer as Great Falls won the league championship with a veteran team that included three No. 1 draft choices. Pitchers Kiki Jones and Jamie McAndrew combined for 19 wins in as many decisions and Tom Goodwin had a league-record 60 stolen bases.

American honors in both football and baseball the same year, according to published reports. Other draftees assigned to Great Falls included catcher Dan Gray, a seventh-round pick out of New York City; infielder Tim Griffin, a 15th-round selection from Stanford University; outfielder Keoki Farrish, a 12th-round pick from Ohlone (Calif.) College; outfielder Ira Smith from Maryland-Eastern Shore College; and third baseman Burgess Watts, from Dupage (111.) University. Also ticketed for Great Falls are two players who have been in the LA organization for a time, pitcher Pedro Martinez and highly touted outfielder Raul Modesi. Martinez, 18, is' the younger Sizzling Chisox move to within one game of Athletics Walden "We're going to have experience in key areas," Vavra said. "But we won't have as much depth overalll, in the pitching department especially." Walden, a left-handed pitcher from Blanchard (Okla.) High, was the ninth player picked in the first round.

At Blanchard High this spring Walden was 11-0 with a 0.36 ERA. Busch, drafted in the fourth round by the Dodgers, is 6-foot-4 and 249 pounds. "He's a small giant," Vavra said. The first baseman was an all-Big Eight tight end last fall, with 23 receptions for 375 yards and two touchdowns. He is the only athlete in Iowa State history to earn Ail- straight loss.

Stieb (9-2) allowed five hits in seven innings, including a first-inning home run by Gene Larkin. Jim Acker and Duane Ward each pitched one scoreless inning. Loser Allan Anderson (2-9) yielded five runs and 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings and suffered his fifth straight loss. Borders, who entered the game in an 0-for-ll skid, hit his ninth home run with two out and Kelly Gruber and Fred McGriff aboard via singles. Toronto made it 5-1 in the seventh on Manny Lee's double and a single by Junior Felix, who doubled home two more runs against Gary Wayne in the ninth.

Minnesota, after setting a club record by going 21-7 in May, is 2-10 in June. The Blue Jays, who began play one-half gfame ahead of Boston in the American League East, have won three straight and seven of eight. CLEVELAND DETROIT ab bi ab bi Webster cf 3 0 0 0 Whitakr2b 4 0 0 0 -r III By The Associated Press CHICAGO The Chicago White Sox climbed within a game of first-place Oakland in the American League West by defeating the Athletics and Dave Stewart 3-2 Thursday night as Lance Johnson singled home the decisive run in the second inning.

The game was the first of the season between the teams with the best records in the American League. The A's are 39-20, the White Sox 37-20. AL roundup Winner Eric King (6-1) gave up 10 hits but only one run in 5 2-3 innings. Bobby Thigpen, Chicago's fifth pitcher, worked the ninth for his 21st save, breaking a tie with Oakland's Dennis Eckersley and Cleveland's Doug Jones for the major-league lead. He gave up one hit and struck out two.

The White Sox, who have won six of seven and 14 of 19, had all their runs before Oakland scored. They took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Johnson drew a leadoff walk, took third on Robin Ventura's single and scored on Ivan Calderon's sacrifice fly. Chicago made it 3-0 in the second after loading the bases with one out on a walk to Carlton Fisk and singles by Sammy Sosa and Scott Fletcher. Fisk scored on Ozzie Guillen's grounder and Johnson's single scored Sosa. Oakland scored in the third on Doug Jennings' triple and Carney Lansford's single.

The A's got their other run off Wayne Edwards in the seventh on doubles by Dave Henderson and Felix Jose. The game was delayed in the second after Stewart (9-4) threw a wild pitch and came up limping. He complained about the condition of the mound and the grounds crew did some work before the game continued. Bill Spiers opened the Milwaukee seventh with a single off reliever Brian Holton (2-2) and took second when Paul Molitor swung at a pitchout with Spiers running and grounded out.

Spiers took third on a wild pitch and, after Sheffield walked, scored on Yount's sacrifice fly off Mark Williamson. Spiers reached on an error by Williamson to start the ninth, stole second and scored on Sheffield's single. Sheffield took second on a groundout and went to third on Dave Parker's infield hit. On a double steal, catcher Mickey Tettleton threw to second and Sheffield beat the return throw to the plate. The Orioles rallied from a 5-1 deficit and tied the game on Cal Ripken's two-run double in the fifth.

Prior to the hit, Ripken had been 1-for-23 in bases-loaded situations over the past two seasons. It was his first multiple-RBI game since May 22. Cubs, Phils postponed PHILADELPHIA The Chicago at Philadelphia game was rained out in the fifth inning with the Phillies ahead 2-0 and just two outs from winning. Chicago was batting with one out in the fifth when the game was called. If the Phillies had gotten through the inning with the lead, the game would've been official. The game will be made up as part of a twi-night doubleheader Friday starting at 3:35 p.m. MDT.

Mets, Pirates rained out PITTSBURGH The New York Mets at Pittsburgh game was rained out in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game was scoreless and the Pirates did not have a hit off David Cone. The game will be made up on Sept. 5 as part of a twi-night brother of Los Angeles pitcher Ramon Martinez. He was 7-2 with a 2.75 ERA last year for the Dodgers at Santo Domingo in the Dominican Summer League.

"He has a Kiki Jones-type fastball," said Vavra of Pedro. "He has as much potential." Modesi, 19, hit .276 with two homers, 27 RBI and 26 stolen bases last year at Santo Domingo. "He's got everything," Vavra said. "He's probably the best outfielder in the organization, for his age." Vavra said he hoped to have catcher Ed Lund, from Notre Dame, once he signs and reports to Dodgertown. The Great Falls skipper said the middle infield situation was sketchy at present, with Dodg last start, held Boston to four hits and a run in seven innings as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox.

With the score tied 1-1, Jesse Bar-field opened the seventh with a double, only the fifth hit off rookie Dana Kiecker (1-3), who struck out a career-high nine and did not walk a batter. Barfield took third on Mel Hall's groundout against Rob Murphy and scored on Jerry Reed's wild pitch. Catcher John Marzano moved out for a pitchout but Reed threw the ball low and near the plate and it went to the backstop. The Yankees added an insurance run on a single by Jim Leyritz and Bob Geren's double. Cary (3-2), who gave up six runs ninth, but Rob Dibble (4-1) gave up the tying run as Dale Murphy snapped out of series-long slump.

Dibble has blown five of his 11 save opportunities this season. Ron Gant singled with one out and moved to second on Jim Presley's groundout. Murphy, 2-for-15 with seven strikeouts in the four-game series, then grounded the first pitch up the middle to score Gant and tie the game. The win gave the Giants a sweep of the three-game series in San Diego and brought their record for June to 12-1. San Francisco has won 14 of its last 15 and trails San Diego by just one-half game for second in the NLWest. NL roundup Steve Bedrosian loaded the bases in the ninth before getting Roberto Alomar to ground into a double play. The Padres led 2-0 against Francisco Oliveras, making his first National League start.

Garry Tem-pleton homered with two outs in the second, his fifth of the season, and Tony Gwynn tripled and scored in the third on Joe Carter's single. The Giants left nine runners on base over the first six innings, before finally reaching starter Bruce Hurst in the seventh. Hurst (3-6) who hasn't won a game since May 18, walked Brett Butler and Rick Parker to start the inning. Will Clark's single scored Butler and, after Greg Harris releived Hurst, Mitchell doubled home Parker to tie the game 2-2. Matt Williams grounded out, leaving runners on second and third, and Gary Carter was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Mike Kingery, pinch hitting for Robbie Thompson, drove in Clark with the go-ahead run. Templeton led off the ninth with a single. One out later, Joey Cora walked and Leon Roberts was hit by a pitch. Alomar's double-play grounder to shortstop ended the game. 20-10 15- 10 16- 16 15-14 17- 14 13-16 9-18 Division GB L10 Streak Home Away z-7-3 7-3 z-8-2 z-3-7 Won 3 19-8 18-14 3 7 7V2 Won 2 Won 3 Lost 1 Lost 3 Lost 4 17-10 18-16 19-13 10-15 13-14 16-15 12- 19 14-16 13- 21 12-15 12 13 4-6 2-8 Division GB L10 Streak Home Away 3-7 5-5 z-9-1 3-7 z-6-4 Won 2 15-8 21-12 11- 10 19-14 12- 18 7 VA 10 12 Lost 3 Won 5 Lost 4 Won 6 19-18 12-16 16- 14 17- 15 9-19 14 z-4-6 Lost 2 11-16 12-19 Minnesota at Kansas City, 8:05 p.m.
