Wang It is simply to mention the name only and "Wang" is remembereJ aud greeted like an old friend, simplv because "Wang," than which no comic opera has had a greater success, brings with it a gorgeous array of absolutely new and accurate Siamese costumes and magnificent scenery, which with etjnal accuracy represents the Siamese localities in which the scenes of the opera are laid.

This attraction comes to Eau Claire, for one night only, Mon We have just received a large consignment of White and Embroideries direct from the importers, thus enabling us to retail them at jobbers' prices and still make a fair profit. The line of white goods comprises everything that is new in Swisses, India Linens, Lawns, Mulls, Nainsooks, Batistes, Dimities, Figured Muslins, etc. The prices will pleasantly surprise you. Laces are exceedingly popular for trimming. The great demand for these goods will make them very scarce before the season is over.

Anticipating the scarcity of select patterns we placed our orders ealv. We are now showing the newest creations in Valencienne, Bordons, Guipures, Orientals, Torchons, Venetians, in white cream and brown. Prices are right. Words cannot express the daintiness of the patterns in our new line of embroideries. But this we can say that it is by long odds the choicest line ever shown in the city Everything is here The designs are entirely new.

Prices are about 25 per bent lower than usual. ints to Balk the Inquisitive. The niau who gets up early in the morning so he cau have a look at his neighbor's paper 'before the rightful owner has a chance to take it front his doorstep does not stand very high in the estimation of the newsdealer. This is because he spoils trade. There is another man, however, who is even more cordially detested Lythf vender of periodicals, lie is the follow who never buys anything but has Uk habit of dipping into the weekly papers hihI The keeper of news-stand makes a tempting display of his stock, for he knows that a stivo picture or even a pretty cover ofteu rocs him a stray costuuier, but ho cp1 the mere looker-on to lw content this much, and he is likely frown upou the man who resorts' to inds of tschemes in ol der to get pvp at the inside pages.

They run through the leaves of the Htest hooks and magazines, and have been knowu to draw the tacks out of jnipers nailed up against the stand so thu they could see what was ou the other side of the sheet. Hut it is not what they see and read for nothing that worries the newsdealer. He would be Uiiug put up with that it they did not iujure his stock. He would rather have you ask him to hand you a periodical than to have you shove his stock all out of line hile trying to see the half of the page that is hidden by a pile of other papers. So great has this nuisance become that the newsdealers have had to adopt schemes for their own protection.

The most successful, so far as preventing the leaves from being turned, consists of placing a rubber baud- around the top and bottom of a magazine and using it on the top of each pile. Her Jog tells a thHlling story of her narrow and providential escape from destruction by fire in the cargo at sea. When 34 days out from Grangemouth, the coal cargo beneath the forehatch -was discovered to be ablaze, about seven feet below the deck. Water was pumped through the hatchery and the crew set to dischaig-lng coals as fast as possible. Despite all efforts flames began to burst front the burning cargo on the 35th day and tlen began a terrible fight for life, vjhich lasted until the vessel docked at Pernambuco 12 days later. At times the crew almost lost heart, but the thought of the terrible fate certain to overtake them should the fire get be-j'ond control sustained their courage and enabled them to hold their own until Pernambuco was reached.

There the vessel discharged a great portion of her cargo, made necessary repairs and proceeded on an uneventful voyage to San Francisco. Wo nrO Of ill m'm'nn jLjivu ji vjiiyju Winter. The Turkish sultan, by his imperial edict forbidding the admission into Turkey of people desiring to offer aid to the suffering Armenians, has added another justification, to the already long for blotting him andliis empire from the face of the earth. The old cut throat has forfeited all claim to be classed with civilized mouarchs and should be. treated accordingly, and it is to be hoped he will be given the attention his case deserves iu the near future.

The Chippewa Independent thus endorses a progressive movement recently inaugurated here: The scheme for an organization to' bt known "The Oiiiwa Valley Immigration anl to com i rise the counties of Eau Claire, 'liiiiewa, Clark, Dunn, Barron, Was-hburn, Sawyer, Price, Taylor, Tremiwaleau, Pepin and Buffalo, has far as-Kumed shupe that a convention will shortly lie held iu Eau Claire for the. purpose of perfecting the organization. The La Crosse board of trade has demanded recognition of the Cuban in: surgents as belligerents by the government of the United States, but The Morning Chronicle of that city calls a halt and intimates that the insurgents are a lot of pillaging, plundering, ravaging vagabonds who are devastating "the island for no well-defined purpose.

However this may be, the Eau Claire board of trade should wake up and say something and not permit those La Crosse fellows to be "running things'' in this manner. Assemblyman George Duckstaff, of Oshkosh, publishes a statement of State University finances. The amount required for maintenance, leaving out of account appropriations for repairs and equipment, is 8000,000 for two years. Permanent funds, government aid for experimental stations and student's fees, aggregate the estimated sum of This amount deducted from the above total, leaves 8392,000 for two years or for one year, which is the sum to be raised by taxation; and with an attendance of the cost per student is 128.12. Which is not so very high after all.

Arguments will be made about Feb. 1, before Gov. Upham, on the application for the pardon of Rose Zoldoskl. It will be remembered that this was one of the most sensational cases ever tried in Wisconsin. She was convicted upon circumstantial evidence entirely, and without any evidence being submitted oh the part of the defense.

A great many people in the state now believe her innocent of the The jury which found her guilty exceptionally intelligent, and it seems hardly possible that a wrong verdict, was rendered. Jt is an unfortunate fact that the greatest criminals can usually only be convicted by circumstantial evidence, as they are careful that ncr direct- evidence is at hand when the crime is committed, but it has been well said that circumstantial evidence, when the chain is complete! is the most convincing and complete of all. If Rose Zoldoski is not guilty, it is to be hoped her innocence- will be made plain to the governor, but if she is guilty, life imprisonment is hardly an adequate punishment for so terrible a The Gentlemen's Social.
