The second oc- curing on the west side of the site, and when completed in late 1976. it will double the plant's lowdensity polyethylene capacity, raising' to 500 million pounds per year. "Although ethylene is our largest volume the plant actually makes four distinct products.

In addition to ethylene and polyethylene, Cedar Bayou produces annually 150 million pounds of high-purity propylene and 130 million pounds of normal alpha olefins." Distribution of the plant's ethylene and propylene is made via pipeline, operated by Gulf Refining a subsidiary of Gulf Oil Corp. The ethylene pipeline system is over 200 miles long is the largest of its kind in the U.S. Both ethylene and propylene pipelines are connected to underground storage wells at Mont Belvieu. About 350 workers are employed at the plant 250 by Gulf and 100 by Brown and Root. Another 1,300 are employed by the contractor who is building the new ethylene unit and during the third quarter of this year, Strausser estimates that both contractors will have total peak employment of about 2,500 workers.

Cedar Bayou is not the largest petrochemical complex in the Baytown area, Strausser acknowledged, but "'the plant plays an important role in the overall economic well-being of the" community." The majority of the labor force associated with the expansion work at the plant are area residents and the project itself is Leon Brown RENT TO OWN MERCHANTS T.V. 1101S.PRUETT 422-3083 THE PROBLEM SOLVER NORTH MAIN RENTAL 1610 N.
