1 Oakland Tribune, Monday, May 22, 1950 DURANT PARK IN EAST OAKLAND BECOMES PART OF CALIFORNIA'S VAST STATE SYSTEM Former F. C. Talbot Estate, With Rare Trees, Is Dedicated An overflow crowd of 6000- overflow because approximately half that number were turned back for lack of more parking facilities--turned out yesterday as Durant Park in the East Oakland hills was taken into the California park. system as Eastbay State Park. The 451-acre tract at 98th Avenue and Mountain Boulevard, which will be operated for the State Park System and the City of Oakland by the East Bay Botanical and Zoological Society, was formally dedicated as the feature of the society's First Annual Members' Day, with Gordon Graham, president of the society, as principal speaker.

FORMAL CEREMONIES Purchased last year by the state, the woodland tract was formally turned over to the City of Oakland by Joseph R. Knowland, chairman of the State. Park Commission, and in turn, was given into the care of the zoological society by Councilman William H. D. Clausen and W.

F. Ostrander, president of the Oakland Board of Park Directors. The city has leased the park area for 50 years, and it will be operated by the zoological society with Sidney A. Snow as director. Other speakers on the dedicatory program were Mrs.

W. L. Riser, who introduced the guests, the Rev. J. H.

McCartney, who delivered the invocation, and Snow, who told of the park's history. The Castlemont High School Band furnished music for the occasion. OTHER EVENTS park system. KNOWLAND'S REMARKS Knowland, in turning over the Other events on the day's program included an exhibition of muzzle loading pistols and rifles by the Oakland Pistol Club, an exhibition of horsemanship, a band concert and a folk dancing exhibition. The park, once the ranch of Capt: Frederick C.

Talbot, pioneer lumber shipping tycoon, was purchased for park purposes in the twenties by Cliff Durant! and Norman DeVaux, but came into the possession of the Bank of America during the depression period of the early thirties. It was taken over several years ago by East Bay Botanical and Zoological Society, and in 1949, largely through Knowland's etforts, was acquired by the State park, said: "Several years ago, as chairman of the California State Park Commission, I took notice of the fact that Los Angeles County had made application to the state for the establishment of an arboretum park in the historic and famous grounds. known as the Baldwin property near Arcadia. thought came to my mind County, in of Oakland, right here, in Alameda was the old F. Talbot, interested in shipping, had instructed his captains to bring from ditferent sections of the world specimens of beautiful and uncommon trees and plant them within these grounds. In addition to climatic advantages this was.

close to the great University of California where experts on arboriculture were a available for advice and consultation. VOTED APPROPRIATION "At my. suggestion, unanimously concurred in by the com-' mission, the state made available an appropriation of $330,000, and the Alameda County Zoological Society, which had title to the property, matched this amount by land after an appraisal by independent appraisers on land values. The state took title and out of the amount paid in cleared the indebtedness on the entire property. "The state entered into a lease with the City of Oakland to operate the park which in turn sublease with the Zoological Society.

The zoo will be fenced off from a the main park property to conform with state policy of no charge for admission, to the aboretum and botanical sections of the state park. A master plan, prepared by experts in this particular field, will be shortly submitted to the state and Oakland Park Commission for approval. "In the years to come this state park, with 450 acres, will no doubt prove to be a most valuable acquisition to the state park system, consisting of over 90 parks, beaches and historical ments, and become an outstanding arboretum and botanical garden. The zoological section will no doubt grow and prosper and prove even more attractive to the people. May the same co-operation exist in the future between the state, city and society." REMARKS IN BAR In an obvious attempt to explain remarks attributed to Talle when he stumbled into a bar the night his wife was killed, Davis then asked if the fact he turned on the lights and saw the body of his wife would have caused him to make such remarks as "having a dead wife there." The psychiatrist agreed that it would and testified- that the phrasing of the remark would indicate that the information had been given to him by someone else, or else it would have had to be an accident. As to Talle's capability of murder, Dr. Catton said: "No matter whether he was in a car, a bar or a boudoir, he had come to the place where conscious direction of his impulses, whatever they might be, over his unconscious had been taken away."
