Volunteers of the Ely Education Foundation are envisioning ways to display pictures of the school's famous alumni including the first student to become a doctor; an Olympic athlete; a county politician; and actress Esther Rolle, who played the mother on the television series Good Times. The love the black community has for Ely is unwavering, said Fre-drekia Manuel-Forde, the foundation's vice president and a 1966 graduate of the high school whose mascot was the Fighting Tigers'. "She always instilled in us pride," Manuel-Forde said. "We admired her a lot. She wasn't just my principal, but my mother as well.

"Our motto is that as long as there's a Tiger on the face of the earth, Blanche Ely will live. The school, the woman, that's all in one. The nucleus of that town is Blanche Ely High School." 9 i mGr" will be 'She instilled in us pride' By LISA J. HURIASH Staff writer POMPANO BEACH Blanche Ely was known to meet new teachers at the bus stop, take them by the hand and tell them if they were single where in Pompano Beach they would live when they taught at her school. She demanded her students dream and achieve their goals through education, and told teachers to not dare be "dream killers." At parent-teacher meetings, she got standing-room-only attendance.

Everyone knew Ely had something important to She fought, although unsuccessfully, for year-round education not wanting "her" children to leave school in the winter to pick beans. And she managed to get better facilities and scholarships for her students. Ely and her husband lived in Deerfield Beach when she was principal at the school that would later bear her name, but they eventually moved to Pompano Beach, near the school where she served as principal for about two decades. Now her three-bedroom house at Northwest 15th Street and Northwest Sixth Avenue is being fixed up with $44,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds approved by the City Commission. The city bought the house from her heirs for $84,000.

In October, the house will open as the city's first black history museum. The painting is almost complete, the air conditioner is installed, and new tile is on the floors.
