Mattel maker of the 1 1 fashion doll that is the world's best-selling toy, is launching its first full-length Barbie movie. The 84-minute direct-to-video feature stars Barbie as Clara in The Nutcracker and puts her and boyfriend Ken (he's the Nutcracker) in highbrow company: New York City Ballet Master, Chief Peter Martins, will choreograph the ballet segments of the video, and the London Symphony Orchestra will perform the music by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky.

Mainframe Entertainment Inc. will create the stop-motion computer animation that will have BarbieClara pirouetting like Pavlova. One animator's entire job is devoted to Barbie's hair. The movie, which Mattel is producing in-house, is part of Chief Executive Officer Robert Eckert's strategy of expanding the company's core toy brands into broader product categories. "If it's apparel, activities, toys or movies, we're going to be there," says Adrienne Fontanella, president of Mattel's girls' division.

The Nutcracker will be accompanied by a book, eight Nutcracker-theme dolls, sleepwear and a Hallmark Christmas ornament.
