4C Argus-Leader, Sioux Falls, S.D. Sunday, November 19, 1978 Nagel (Continued from Page 1C) moving down." Like Canadian professional football, those who become citizens of the country do not count against roster limitations. "The knowledge of the sport of basketball is weak here," said Nagel. "And that is among both coaches and players. The officiating is the worst.

It is just expected by everybody that you will lose on the road. It also took me a bit of time to get used to the different set of basketball rules." If, as reported, the officiating call always goes in favor of the player with the ball in international rules, Nagel would either have to stop 'taking the charge' or wind up on French Medicaid or the equivalent. "The preseason schedule," said Nagel, "was 11 games and was strange. Sometimes we'd play back-to-back games, sometimes we'd play teams with as much as an 18-point 'handicap' against us. In one game I didn't play at all because our coach saw a coach from another team scouting us.

We lost. Excellent away from the U.S. forever." When he comes back, Nagel hopes to give the National Basketball Association a try if the opportunity presents itself. If not, the Western Basketball League is alive and kicking. Punching, too, if you like the Reno variety.

He's turned down one chance there already. Mostly though, Nagel will be returning to a land of height. Can you imagine 10 months of short people after three years of Arvid Kramer and Paul Schenkelberg? Nagel had a high game of 53 points and averaged 39 in preseason. In the first six of what will be 22 divisional games, he is averaging 30 points and 16 rebounds a contest. "Divisional games will last until March 24," said Nagel.

"After that we play what are called 'Amical' games that translates as 'friendly' in English until the end of May. "My contract lasts until then so we, wife Mary Jo and will return to the U.S. at that time. We are living in Mons en Baroeul, a suburb of Lille, in northern France (at 61 Rue du General de Gaulle). "We have a two-week vacation from our schedule from Dec.

9 to 26 so Mary Jo's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mel Reynolds (of Sioux Falls) are coming over for a month and we'll be traveling across Europe. "It has been a great experience an education. We've been able to learn about French customs and mannerisms and have seen many interesting things.

"The French life has been good to us but not good enough to keep us Brown (Continued from Page 1C) Late last summer Brown took the basketball coaching job at Elkton High School. To his surprise that meant coaching both the boys and girls teams. The first time he ever saw a girls high school basketball game was when he sent his team on the floor for their first game this season, Sept. 4., "It was strange. People would see me at the game and come up to me and ask, 'What are you doing Everywhere, I went I got that question," he said.

"I had a good time though." His team, eliminated from district play in the first round, finished the and take the crucial shot. You have to depend on them to make it." But is it enough? Brown says he doesn't know. He does realize the athlete just won't go away. After snapping out of the doldrums last summer, Brown played amateur baseball. He plans to play independent basketball this winter.

"I can't stop playing. I just can't. I love it too much," he says. "I'm not ready to stop. I know someday I won't want to play anymore, but not now.

It's too soon." And there's always the question. What might have been? "I wonder sometimes what it season with an 8-11 record. "It wasn't bad. At the end of the season, we had started to play well," Brown said. "Still, there's a lot of difference in coaching girls basketball.

You tell them to do something during a game and you can't always be sure they're going to do it." Still, it served its purpose, just like coaching the boys will this winter. It kept him close. "If I can't be playing, I guess this is what I'd like to be doing. At least, I'm still a part of it," he says. "The hardest thing to get used to as a coach is you can't go out there and do it yourself.

You have to depend on the players. You can't go out there ence. I won the batting title in baseball," he said. "Those are records I'm proud of. I wouldn't want to give them back for anything." Still, just like on the athletic field, he wants to give a little more, try a little harder.

The opportunity he thought he deserved in professional baseball and never had nags. "Maybe tins spring, I'll just pack it up and head South. Maybe I'll hit a few camps. I might just do that," he says. Give it one more try.

I really want it. I want it bad." Brown has never lost a battle for a lack of desire. would have been like if I had taken the offers I had to go play baseball in the South or West. What would have happened if I had just concentrated On baseball? That was probably the biggest decision of my life he says. "I had colleges that wanted me for baseball, others for basketball and even some for football.

I wonder." The next minute he's sure. "No, I can't second guess. If I had it to do over, I'd do the same thing again," he says. "I got to play basketball and baseball at State and had the best time of my life. "I won the conference scoring crown in basketball.
