In commenting on his team's selection, Hawk, the 1976 Coaches Association Coach of the Year, said the season was one of the most pleasant surprises for him in his coaching career. "We didn't realize we were that capable of a team until we were into the season," he said. Hawk also noted that this team may not have been the most talented to ever play at Yankton High School, but it certainly was one of the hardest working squads. This marks the second time Yankton has received the team of the year designation. The undefeated squad of 1970 also received the honor.

Yankton also claimed sole possession of the ESD Conference title for the second straight year.

For these accomplishments, the South Dakota Sportswriters Association has named the Bucks the 1976 High School Team of the Year.
