Mobile Homes Mobile Homes Section 3 Sioux Falls Argus-Leader April 6, 1975 Committee Spends $3.3 Million For White House Refurbishing Suburb Residents Caught In Bureaucratic Nightmare YOU WASHINGTON (AP) For the first time in its 11-year history, the Committee for the Preservation of the White House has given a full financial report, saying it spent $3.3 million to refurbish the Executive Mansion during the Nixon Administration. "No federal funds were spent," the committee's report said, adding that funds came from donations and the sale of White House guidebooks. Altogether, the purchases for the five years that Richard Nixon was President included 252 pieces of furniture, 142 decorative objects of art, 60 paintings and drawings and 54 prints of the White House, as well as 99 chairs, 73 tables, 21 chandeliers and 28 period rugs. The acquisitions also included 17 mirrors and 11 clocks. The Committee for the Preservation of the White House was formed by executive order of President Lyndon B.

Freeman recalls the clerk's answer, 'You know you're right; you're in Denver a number and waif." The controversy began two years ago when Denver annexed the area1 of Jefferson County leaving the Friendly Hills development half in Jefferson County and half in Denver. While the legal problems County and Denver have worked out a compromise for both police departments to answer calls and a fire district is serving the area on an interim basis. For the some two-dozen homeowners in the disputed area of 1,800 home sites, other problems are -not as easily solved.

One section of a street remains unpaved. That section of Quincy Avenue is the hnnndarv fnr raised from private individuals and foundations and from the White House Historical Association, which puts out the guidebook, totaled $3,534,080, the report said. The historical association raised $1.6 million. Among the listed expenditures were such items as $15,442 for the Aaron Shikler portrait of President John F. Kennedy, $33,084 for Blue Room wallpaper, $76,504 for a painting entitled "Farmyard in Winter," $75,000 as a partial payment on a Hepplewhite secretary, $3,900 for andirons and $18,000 for a pair of armchairs.

Decorator Sarah Johnson Doyle received $18,489 for redecorating the private quarters in the first year of the Nixon's occupancy of the White House in 1969 and architect-adviser Edward V. Jones of Albany, received travel expenses in 1973 of $5,569. A total of at least $91,300 was spent in redecorating President Nixon's bedroom, including a $5,000 antique bed with a $450 set of box springs and $10,700 worth of curtains and bed coverings. The report was listed as a preliminary one with the notation by the committee chairman Gary E. Everhardt that "It is customary for a report to be issued for each administration." The area west of Denver, once sparsely populated and mostly ranchland, has been caught up in a maze of jurisdictional boundaries by encroaching urbanization.

"We don't really care whether you put es in Denver or Jefferson County," said Barb Baglo, one of the few dozen homeowners who live in the area. "Put us in Iowa if you have to just so someone responds to our calls." Judy Freeman said she spent from 8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. trying to get license plates for her car. "I waited in a long line and when I got to the counter, I told her my address. The girl told me: 'I can't give you plates, you're not in Jefferson County'." STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) The 20 South Vietnamese students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point are faced with never going home and never seeing their families again. As their native land teeters precariously on the brink of a Communist takeover, the students are growing more and more concerned. "Everyone is really depressed and worried about their families," said foreign student adviser Marcus Fang. The UW-Stevens Point has been instrumental, through government contracts, in heading America programs to upgrade education in South Vietnam in recent years. The school has one of the largest contingents of Vietnamese students at any U.S. college.

Fang said that most of the students have not heard from their families since March 26-27. Then, he said, most of the letters were sorrowful farewells. ''This has been a rough week," Fang said of the Vietnamese students. "They don't understand why America isn't helping any more. Cleveland's answer was a new superhighway that Mayor Ralph Perk said could whisk people to nearby Akron in about 25 minutes and "we could take over almost all of the hotels in Akron." New Orleans said con-ventioners could find more rooms from 30 minutes to W2 hours outside the city on a "very delightful drive" towards the Gulf Coast. Miami Beach, which hosted the convention in 1972, put in another bid and was told by the DNC Chairman Robert Strauss that its biggest disadvantage was that the Democrats know how expensive the city is and "you can't fool us like some of the other cities can. When Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley tried to tell the committee its freeways are not always congested, Strauss recalled the time a plane "landed on the freeway.

I spent two hours looking at a plane." "we thought you wanted a plane," Los Angeles County Democratic Chairman Paul Ziffren told him. New York City's biggest difficulty seemed to be that Madison Square Garden was not big enough. To prove otherwise, its president, Mike Burke, former owner of the New York Yankees, offered to cancel the circus for a day and set up a convention mock-up. Another Garden official, asked where Democratic candidates could park their numerous campaign trailers "There could be 10 or 100," Strauss quipped described a large area off the main arena which, he said, "is presently where we keep the animals for the circus."
