That's the way things went for South Dakota State Saturday afternoon as the Jacks rolled over North Dakota 28-6 before 11,961 Hobo Day fans. Heading into the annual homecoming affair, John Gregory's Jacks had lost 19 of 23 fumbles and had had 14 passes picked off by the enemy.

But the Yellow and Blue put it all together Saturday, turning the ball over only twice while taking advantage of nine Sioux turnovers. Offensively theTiosts rolled up 385 yards, but it was the defense that disrupted North Dakota's game plan. Curt Nelson, a 6-1, 220-pound senior linebacker from Minneapolis, was a standout for the Jacks. The 5-foot-ll, 191-pound junior trampled the ground 16 times for 142 yards. NDS was tied for the NCC leadership last week before they boosted their conference mark to 3-0 and their season record to 4-2. They meet North Dakota in next week's football action. Augustana, now 0-3 in the league, slipped to 2-4 over all. Scott Magnuson led Augie's ball carriers with just seven yards in five carries while Bill O'Connor had five yards in three carries.

Mike Gustafson caught five passes for 51 yards for the Vikings while punter Brent Hoegh averaged 45.4 yards on eight kicks. Chounard threw 30 times, completing 11, for 104 yards. He threw three inter cpetions. recoveries, busted up two pass plays, had a quarterback sack and was credited with a vicious hit that led to a fumble. Viborg senior Gene Ludens, a 230-pound linebacker, had 14 solo tackles and three assists while junior nose guard Don Charlson of Sioux City had seven solos, five assists, a fumble recovery, a pass interception and four quarterback sacks.

Defensive backs Bill Bunkers, Paul Erickson, Bob Schmidt and Rick Haring all had key plays for the Jacks as did linemen Roberto Parker, Bill Matthews, Clay Fischer and Mark Hendricks. "Actually, we didn't play as well today as we did the last two weeks," said State defensive coordinator Mike Daly. "But I'm really proud of these guys. They bent a little out there today, but really came up with a lot of big plays to keep the Sioux from scoring." The tempo of the contest was set early as North Dakota's Bill Deutsch fumbled on the first play of -the game and Nelson recovered. The Jacks came up empty, however, as a Dan DeLaHunt field goal attempt from the 12 failed.

The Sioux' second drive was stopped at their own 40 when Hendricks, a 215-pound sophomore from Sioux Falls, picked off a Greg Gunderson pass. State scored four plays later when Dick Weikert, back in action after missing last week's win over Morningside with an ankle injury, fired a 26-yard pass to Paul Konrad. DeLaHunt's extra point kick was wide. North Dakota, suffering its sixth straight loss of the season, took the Jack kickoff and drove from its own 48 to the SDS three where a Gunderson fumble was recovered by defensive tackle Jim Peterson. Konrad gained two yards to the five and on the next play Pine Island, junior Mike Lunde raced 95 yards for State's second touchdown.

The run was the longest from scrimmage in Jackrabbit history. The previous best was 91 yards by Jerry Welsh against St. Thomas, in 1954. Weikert's successful two-point conversion run was helped by a key block by Valley Springs sophomore Jon Bly. The next series for the Sioux also ended in frustration as Nelson fell on another Deutsch fumble at the North Dakota 29.

Starting at the UND 45, State drove for its last touchdown with Bly going the final two yards. North Dakota scored with 55 seconds remaining in the half as Gunderson hooked up with senior tight end Tom Petrik on a 52-yard pass. Despite spending most of the second half on the field, the Jackrabbit defenders successfully blanked the Sioux.
