Number one proposition for the community to face is to be decided at a public hearing called by the State Railroad Commission which is the controlling governmental agency in such matters for 10 a on December 28 at the Town HalL The Cathedral City Water Company which owns the water company in the village no doubt has its difficulties and may be justified in asking for increased income but the harassed citizenry feel an added tax should be resisted and so expressed themselves at a mass meeting that was called and well attended following the Community Christmas Tree exercises at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening of this week Hill-ery president of the Chamber of Commerce was asked to preside and after some discussion as to the value of a protest by the Chamber of Commerce and the Club the following committee was chosen on motion: Wm Hagen Homer Gould Mrs Emma McMicklc Mart-ell A Ramberg Cobb Gepfert I Jacobsen Larrison Mrs Ella Dorn Mrs Ora Gepfert Fred Springer Mrs Edna La as services at Palm Springs Community church Christmas Day 8:00 a Special Christmas service Christmas music Commander Thales Boyd commander of one of largest submarines during the World War gave the Masonic Luncheon Club a very interesting talk about submarines Tuesday noon at the Palm Springs Hotel Commander Boyd gave the history of submarines and told how the boats are constructed and operated He said the most effective way of combatting enemy submarines is with submarines and that a submarine commander fears ramming by another boat more than he fears airplanes battle' ships or depth bombs Airplanes are more effective in locating submarines than they are in destroying them for it is the shadow of the U-boat that the airplane pilot can see rather than the boat itself Even if he could see the boat airplane bombing is so inaccurate that there is little chance of hitting a submarine with a bomb dropped from a plane The commander has little faith in the various devices that have been made to rescue men from submarines that cannot come to the surface When the boat is put out of action and cannot come to the surface the men know their fate and for that reason nearly every U-boat sailor carries a cynadide capsule or a gun in order to avoid a lingering death The submarine service has the pick of the navy he said and nearly every American sailor in the submarine service knows how to operate every device in the ship and can take charge of every station Because of this and because each man has so much respect for the other's ability there is a camaraderie in the American submarine service to be found in no other branch of the army or navy service in any country of the world The commander told some very interesting stories of his experiences in the service and experiences of some of his friends who We wish to extend to all of the people of this territory our sincerest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year At this time when there is so much of war and turmoil in the world it is a great privilege to live and work in America It is also an inspiration to work for and among the people of this District and we wish to express our appreciation of that fact at this time LAND IN LOCAL JAIL UNDER SUSPICION OF BURGLARY Peter Ewald 51 of Clovis California and Boniface Marquez 59 Palm Springs Mexican laborer were both placed in the Palm Springs jail Tuesday submarines One of these was about a British commander who took his submarine up a river in Germany and sank two German war vessels while these were at their docks and even though the German ships dropped depth bombs from the mouth of the river to the point where the ships were sunk the submarine escaped trol committee of the Chamber of Commerce went to Coachella and interviewed the officials relative to having some work done in this area for the tax money being paid by the community or the community being permitted to withdraw from the district Action of some kind is likely-to-be in the near future and more details will be furnished through this space Hollis Thompson city manager of Berkeley who has been recuperating from an illness re turned with Mrs Thompson to his duties on Heating is only one of the many items still needed to make the community meeting place a comfortable place but if the performance is as good as its ooks it will meet with approval With the Sunday school meeting there on chilly mornings and the library open on Tuesday and Friday afternoons as well as suppers dances and other public meetings it helps a lot Urged by and endorsed by the Chamber of
