curator of the Desert Inn Gallery announces that her art gallery has just acquired two rare paintings for the uninitiated that means that the books have paintings concealed under the gilt covering of the The painting is revealed when the leaves of the book are flexed in a certain way but it is entirely hidden to the casual observer who is unaware that a is present A young American artist Lyman Young has revived the art of painting and though proper books are almost inaccessible he produces a limited number every year The Desert Inn Gallery is fortunate in having these two books to show in Palm Springs painting was originally done by Samuel Meame book binder to Charles II of England in the latter part of the 71th century The art reached its peak of tradition around 1800 when miniature painters were employed in the libraries of the nobility to paint as means of identification and for special gifts The tradition is almost exclusively English When books began to be printed under mass production methods the art was almost complete-abandoned since the more modern papers used in books made painting impossible One of the two books being exhibited in the Desert Inn Gal-ery is a This
