Sunday, November 18. 1979 Great Falls Tribune 27 Lomax, Portland State outduel Grizzlies 40-32 By WARREN WINTRODE MISSOULA (AP) Portland State quarterback Neil Lomax became the NCAA's all-time leading passer Saturday by throwing for 381 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings kept their football playoff hopes alive with a 40-32 non-conference victory over the University of Montana. ft, 1" Big Sky Lomax, only a junior, now has passed for a career total of 8,713 yards, breaking the mark of 8,521 set by Abilene Christian's Jim Lindsay in 1967-70. Portland State, an independent, now is 6-4 with one game left and still has a chance of being picked as the West's representative in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

Lomax completed 30 of 48 passes Saturday, including scoring strikes of yards to Jeff Rudolph and 43 yards to Clint Didier. The Vikings also got 4 Boise St. 56, Cal Poly SLO 14 BOISE, Idaho (AP) Tailback Cedric inter and quarterback Joe Aliotti ran up five quick touchdowns as Boise State coasted to a 56-14 non-conference football victory over Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday. Aliotti threw five touchdown passes and Minter ran for three touchdowns and 201 yards as the Broncos rolled up their 10th straight victory after an opening-season loss. Cal-Poly, hoping for a victory to win a spot in the Division II playoffs, instead fell to 7-3 for the season.

S. Dakota St. 27, Idaho 13 MOSCOW, Idaho (AP). South Dakota Slate's Jerry James scored two touchdowns Saturday to lead the Jackrabbits to a 27-13 victory over the University of Idaho in a non-conference football game. The game was Idaho's final one, and left the Vandals with a 3-8 record.

South Dakota State, sixth-ranked in NCAA-Division II before the game, is 9-2. James rustjed for 56 yards and caught a pass for 10 yards, scoring the Jackrabbits' first and final touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Utah St. 34, Weber St. 10 OGDEN, Utah (AP) Utah State's Rick Parros scored three touchdowns and picked up 208 yards to lead USU to a 34-10 non-conference football victory over in-state rival Weber State College Saturday.

Senior running back Parros moved his season rushing total to 1,068 as the Aggie offense moved the ball at will. Both teams were plagued by turnovers. Weber gave up the ball six times and USU surrendered it four times. The Aggies were able to capitalized by converting Weber's mis-cues into scores. Weber suffered from an ineffective offense most of the afternoon.

They gained only 72 yards on the ground, and their passing was sporadic. scoring runs of 1 and 17 yards from fullback Joel Sigel and field goals of 35 and 29 yards by John Kinchelor. It was a 92-yard kickoff return by speedy freshman Kenny Johnson with 6:03 left in the game that gave the Vikings a 40-24 lead and iced the victory. Montana quarterback Bob Boyes also had a big day by throwing for four touchdowns. He tallied 356 yards on 22 completions in 41 attempts.

Pat Sullivan hauled In a 29-yarder for a TD, and Jim Hard caught scoring passes of 23, 18 and 6 yards. Boyes was intercepted four times, once on the Portland State 1-yard line and then in the end zone to kill Grizzly drives In the third quarter when Montana trailed by only a touchdown. Montana, a Big Sky Conference team, finished its season at 3-7. The key interceptions for Portland State were made by Doug Rabe at the 1 after Montana had marched 47 yards following a second-half kickoff, and by Kevin Alexander in the end zone after the Grizzlies had moved 43 yards to the Viking 19-yard line. Alexander earlier intercepted another Boyes' pass in the second quarter at the Portland State 14, and Fred Flora had the other Viking theft in the fourth quarter.

Boyes set two Grizzly single-season records Saturday: most yardage passing, and most interceptions, 15. Hard also established two UM season records: most receptions, 47; and most yardage by a receiver, 722. Nev-Reno 32, Mo. Southern i RENO (AP) Wolf Pack fullback Frank Hawkins set a Big Sky Conference rushing record Saturday in leading the University of Nevada-Reno to a 32-6 rout over Missouri Southern. Hawkins rushed for 135 yards and 25 carries and a touchdown, pushing his total to 1,536 a school and conference season-record.

The junior scored on a 28-yard burst in the first quarter, giving Reno a 10-0 lead. 4 I WARMING UP Julie Jursnick of Great Falls High Saturday. Stanford finished 5-5-1. Campbell, Cal's junior quarterback, threw for three touchdowns and 314 yards. His season yardage total of 2,618 established a school record. Stanford's Turk Schonert threw his 18th and 19th touchdown passes of the season, with the second of the day pulling the Cardinals into a 14-14 tie early in the third quarter. Cal lost a fumble at the Stanford 19-yard line late in the third period but drove 43 yards in the last quarter to win.

Rose, who caught a 23-yard touchdown pass on Cal's first possession, scored the game-winner on a 17-yard toss. One official ruled Rose was out of bounds behind the end zone on the catch, but the decision was overruled by referee John BarRer. Air Force 30, Vanderbilt 29 AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) Quarterback Dave Ziebart hit diving freshman split end Andy Bark with a 14-yard scoring pass as time expired, and Jim Sturch added the clinching extra point as Air Force closed out its college football season Saturday with a dramatic 30-29 triumph over Vanderbilt. Bark's reception capped a desperation drive for the Falcons, who had taken a 23-21 lead with 5:32 left in the game but saw the advantage disappear following a Vanderbilt touchdown and a safety.

Following a fumbled punt return by Air Force, Frank Mordica burst 14 yards off the left side for a touchdown with 2:47 left, and the Vanderbilt defense tackled Ziebart in the end zone less than a minute later to seemingly ice the victory. Commodore quarterback Van Heflin ran 70 and 80 yards for touchdowns, and he accounted for another score on a 8-yard pass to flanker Preston Brown as Vanderbilt built a 21-14 lead early in the second half. SEATTLE (AP) Washington's Huskies stayed alive in the Rose Bowl picture Saturday and earned an invitation to the Sun Bowl. With Tom Flick passing 20 yards to Paul Skansi and tailback Vince Coby running three yards lor touchdowns in the second quarter, the 16th-ranked Huskies beat Washington State 17-7 in a rainy Pacific-10 Conference football game. Afterwards, Sun Bowl officials said they had invited Washington to play at El Paso, Texas, on Dec.

22 if the Huskies don't make it to the Rose Bowl. UCLA would have to upset No. 4 Southern California in Los Angeles on Nov. 24 for Washington to win the Pac-10 championship and go to the Rose Bowl for the second time in three seasons. Southern Cal beat Washington 24-17 at Seattle last weekend, but the Huskies got a reprieve Thursday night when Pac-10 officials voted to make Arizona State forfeit its conference victories because of ineligible players.

Washington, 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the Pac-10, and Washington State, 4-7 overall and 3-5 in the conference, played on a dark and gloomy day that included a driving rainstorm in the fourth quarter. After a scoreless first period, the Huskies drove for two touchdowns and a 14-0 halftime lead. Washington went ahead 17-0 at 10-22 in the third quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Mike Lansford. The Cougars got their lone tally on a 19-yard run by quarterback Steve Grant at 13: 12 of the final period. Washington's first touchdown came on a 57-yard, seven-play drive after the Cougars got a 38-yard quick kick by fullback Brian Sickler on a third-and-14 situation at the Washington 19.

The big plays were a 22-yard run by Coby up the middle and a 13-yard pass from Flick to Aaron Williams. Coby scored on his 3-yard run four minutes and 37 seconds before halftime. "This is one of the easiest coaching weeks in the year," Pardee added, reflecting on the teams' intense rivalry. "All you've got to do is put the film on the machine. You know the players are going to get ready for the Cowboys When you're facing the perennial division champion, a team that plays in the Super Bowl and is our main competition for our success, it comes out a little special.

You've got to get by them. "At this point, I just want to beat them because they're on our schedule. They're a divisional opponent and they're leading our division. That's enough incentive right there." The Eagles, who escaped with a 24-20 victory in St. Louis five weeks ago, must find a way to slow down Ottis Anderson.

The Cardinals' sensational rookie rushed for 105 yards in last Sunday's 30-28 loss to Washington and has 1,105 yards for the year, second only to Walter Payton's 1,154 yards for Chicago. The Eagles got some experience handling 100-yard runners last Monday night when they limited Dallas' Tony Dorsett to 53 yards. The Giants are considered longshots for an NFC wildcard berth, being two games behind the Eagles and 'Skins and one back of the Bears and New Orleans (each 6-5) -but they're riding high behind rookie quarterback Phil Simms. Their winning ways started the same time he took over the day their 3-4 defense threw a monkey wrench into Tampa Bay's offense and produced a 17-14 New York victory. The Bucs, at 8-3, are tied with Dallas for the NFC's best record and lead Chicago by two games in the Central Division.

The Steelers are the NFL's highest scoring club with 294 points to San Diego's 270 and will be trying to lengthen a four-game streak in which they have allowed a touchdown or less. In their last four games they've won by margins of 42-7, 14-3, 38-7 and 30-3. Further, Pittsburgh is 6-0 lifetime against the Chargers. The Steelers, the winningest club in the NFL this year at 9-2, are also trying to retain their American Conference Central lead (one game over Houston, two over Cleveland) while the Chargers, 8-3, are trying to break the deadlock with Denver atop the AFC West. Also tied for first are New England and Miami, each at 7-4 in the AFC East, while New Orleans, at 6-5, is one game ahead of Los Angeles.

By BRUCE LOWITT AP Sports Writer Until last Monday night, most pro football insiders would have been willing to all but guarantee that the Dallas Cowboys would be the National Conference's entry in the Super Bowl. Now, though, there's some question whether they'll even win their own division. After Philadelphia burned them 31-21, the Cowboys' NFC East lead over the Eagles and the Washington Redskins was reduced to one game. On Sunday, things could get straightened out a bit or the division lead could end up in a three-way tie. The Cowboys, 8-3, play the first of their two games against the 'Skins, 7-4, in Washington while the Eagles, also 7-4, return home to face the St.

Louis Cardinals. Incidentally, the once-laughable New York Giants must now be considered a playoff contender, too. They've gone from 0-5 to 5-6 (their only loss in six weeks a 16-14 heart-breaker to Dallas) and visit Tampa Bay this Sunday. It was the then-winless Giants who handed the then-unbeaten Bucs their first loss this year six weeks ago. Sunday's other games are Pittsburgh at San Diego, Baltimore at New England, Green Bay at Buffalo, Miami at Cleveland, the New York Jets at Chicago, Detroit at Minnesota, Cincinnati at Houston, Denver at San Francisco, Kansas City at Oakland and New Orleans at Seattle.

On Monday it's Atlanta at Los Angeles. The Redskins fondly remember their meeting with the Cowboys in Washington, a 9-5 victory and when asked if he thought they could repeat, coach Jack Pardee replied: "If we play them the way we played them in the first game last year, if we play as hard as we can, sure we can beat them We're going to beat Dallas. I like our matchups against them and I like playing in RFK Stadium against them. Our record at home against the Cowboys is pretty good." One thing's for sure; Redskins quarterback Joe Theis-mann isn't likely to be surprised or befuddled by Dallas' defense. "The flex defense is standard terminology in all our playbooks," said Pardee.

"We know Dallas has the flex. We don't know who else might use it, but it's something we've got to be ready for throughout the year. It's just part of our overall off-season planning. UCLA 35, Oregon 3 EUGENE, Ore. (AP) Junior tailback Freeman McNeil rushed for 164 yards and scored one touchdown while freshman quarterback Tom Ramsey threw for two more scores as UCLA buried Oregon 35-0 Saturday in a rain-soaked Pac-10 college football game.

Both teams now are 3-3 in the Pac-10 and 5-5 overall. McNeil had 109 yards in the first half as the Bruins went to a 21-0 lead. He saw limited action in the second half after suffering leg cramps late in the third quarter. The Bruins started their scoring when Pete Boermeisier kicked field goals of 28 and 48 yards in the first quarter, and McNeil had a two-yard touchdown run with 12 minutes left in the first half. Eight minutes later, Ramsey threw 17 yards to tight end Tim Wrightman for the final Bruin score of the half.

With 11:38 left in the game, Ramsey tossed a 30-yard score to Jojo Townsell and Anthony Edgar added a 17-yard touchdown run with 5:36 left. The Bruin defense held the Ducks to four first downs in the game and none in the first half. California 21, Stanford 14 STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Rich Campbell of California completed a record-setting passing performance with a fourth-period touchdown pass to tight end Joe Rose, and safety Ron Coccimiglio knocked down a Stanford pass at the goal line with 35 seconds remaining Saturday to save a 21-14 victory for the Bears. a a Florida State receives Orange Bowl bid a a We Want Your DEER ELK MOOSE a TAN WE TRADE WE BUY Temple accepted a bid to play in the Garden State Bowl in East Rutherford, N.J., Dec.

21. The host team in the Holiday Bowl will be either Brigham Young or San Diego State, who play Saturday for the Western Athletic Conference title. BYU clinched at least a tie for the WAC championship with a 27-0 victory over Utah Saturday. Should the Cougars lose to San Diego State, the Cougars could wind up in the Bluebonnet or Fiesta Bowl. By The Associated Press Ohio State won the Big Ten football championship and gained a berth in the Rose Bowl with an 18-15 victory over Michigan as the post-season picture began to take shape Saturday. But there are still numerous holes to fill. By virtue of its victory over the Wolverines, the Buckeyes will play at Pasadena on New Year's Day against the winner of the Pacific-10 championship, which will be either Southern Cal or Washington.

Despite losing, Michigan still received a bowl bid. The Wolverines agreed to play in the Gator Bowl on Dec. 28 against North Carolina, a 13-7 winner Saturday over Virginia. Meanwhile, one of the berths was filled in the Orange Bowl when fifth-ranked Florida State was invited to play there Jan. 1 against the winner of the Nebraska-Oklahoma game next Saturday, which will decide the Big Eight title.

The loser of the Nebraska-Oklahoma contest will wind up in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day against the winner of the Southwest Conference, which could be any one of four teams. Houston, Texas and Arkansas are still in the running in the SWC race and Baylor has a very slim, mathematical chance. Either Texas or Arkansas will be invited to the Sugar Bowl, depending on who makes the Cotton Bowl and how they fare in their final games. The Sun Bowl is also interested in Houston, Texas and Arkansas, plus Washington if it doesn't go to the Rose Bowl. The Southeastern Conference champion, either No.

The Crimson Tide continued unbeaten Saturday with a 30-0 decision over Miami, but could lose out on the Sugar Bowl should they lose Dec. 1 to Auburn.
