According to patterns drawn by WTVJ, Channel 58 will service the southern and central portions of Broward from the ocean to the Everglades. It will overlap Channels 19 and 27 in some areas in eastern parts of the county.

Chan months apart. NBC acquired Channel 4 for $270 million; CBS fetched Channel 6 for the bargain-basement price of $59 million. The reason for the disparity: Channel 4 is potent from the Keys to Palm Beach County. Channel 6, which is licensed to serve south Dade, is virtually invisible absent cable north of the Broward-Dade line. The antenna can't be moved or the power turned up because it would interfere with Channel 6 in Orlando.

WTVJ technical experts have been working to correct the Broward signal deficiencies since the deal was announced in November. General manager Don nel 19's pattern extends west from the Atlantic to the middle of Broward. Channel 27 will serve the northeast portions of the county. If there are shortfalls, according to WTVJ's drawings, they will be in far northwest Broward. WTVJ will have a switchboard in operation around the clock with a toll-free number, 930-6226, to answer questions from viewers having problems.

Callers will merely have to supply their ZIP code to be told which UHF station is most likely to provide the strongest signal and how to find it.
