Unfortunately, the Red Sox couldn't do the same for Finnvold. The Boca Raton righthander turned in five strong innings in his major league debut Tuesday night, leaving with a 5-2 lead in the sixth over the Milwaukee Brewers. Finnvold was denied the win, though, when Milwaukee rallied for six runs in the seventh to pull out a 9-5 victory.

Two wild pitches by Greg Harris sent home the tying and go-ahead runs. "I have no complaints," Finnvold said. "Obviously, I would have liked to have stayed in a little longer and take the pressure off the bullpen but I'm satisfied. "Hopefully, I'll be able to build off this now that I've got the jitters out of the way." Finnvold was the lone bright spot in an otherwise glum night for Boston manager Butch Hobson as the Red Sox dropped their fifth in a row. "He threw very good for his first start" Hobson said.

With Finnvold's father and wife among a supportive crowd of 20,473 at Fenway Park, Finnvold scattered four hits and struck out four while walking two in five innings. Pitching for the first time in nearly a week, the former Florida State stalwart got off to an inauspicious start. "We're a notoriously slow-starting club," Tapani said. "We started out hitting real well. Now our pitching is starting to get a little better and it's showing.

We keep trying to do things in spring training to stop these slow starts in April and May. We've Just got to weather these rough times." "It's pretty awesome," said John Nieporte, a boyhood friend and pro golfer from Boca Raton. Others on hand to watch the game included Finn-void's mother, Carol, his oldest sister, Monique Jarman of Boynton Beach, and more than a dozen of his friends. Carol Finnvold said it was irrelevant how well her son did. "His dream was to pitch at Fenway Park.

It's great." Staff writer Steve Nichol contributed to this report. The admittedly-nervous Red Sox rookie sandwiched a pair of walks around a Bill Spiers' run-scoring single to give Milwaukee a quick 1-0 lead before he could even get the game's first out. "My mouth was so dry, it was like sand was coming out of my mouth" he said. Finnvold quickly settled down, catching Greg Vaughn looking at a called third strike on the outside corner for the first of his four strikeouts. "Maybe that got my head up and was the kick in the butt I needed," Finnvold said.
