NewiSpMIs Editor Ball High and Friendswood continued to be the only Galveston area schoolboy football teams to ride in the Top 26 in their respective classes.

Both teams won their season openers last week. Friendswood's 35-0 lacing of Hitchcock was solid enough to keep the Mustangs as Class AA. A week ago: Ball- High was No. 4 in Class Obviously Ball High's 21-12 victory over Houston St. Thomas wasn't impressive enough to keep Ball at No.

4 in the Harris Schoolboy listings for this week. The Tors slipped a notch to No. 5. If the schools play according to the Harris ratings this week, seven Galveston area schools should come up with victories while four others are likely to go down in defeat. Ball High is a commanding favorite to knock over Houston Forest Brook in a Saturday night game in Smiley Stadium.

Ball, No. 5 in Class AAAA with a 144.8 power Index, is a 17.2 point favorite over Forest Brook, a team ranked 126 in AAAA with 127.6 power points. Texas City has a power index of 127.9 and is a 14.2 choice over Deer Park, a team with U3.7. Clear Creek stands 106 in AAAA with a power index of 129.3 Dickinson is 217 with a 111.4 index. The difference makes Clear Creek's Wildcats favored by 17.9 points.

Clear Lake lost ib opener last week, but the Falcons are eyed to bounce back. Clear Lake is rated 121.2"-to 116.1 for Alvin. The difference stamps the Falcons to win by five Area Grid Outlook Good If last week's wiason openers are an indication, look for Galveston area football fortunes to be high this season. Of the area high schools that opened their campaigns last week, five came through with victories, two had to settle for ties and four went down in defeat. A year ago only four area schools won their openers.

Ball High, O'Connell, Clear Creek, Friendswood and High Island carded victories last week. The team that had the toughest go was Ball High. The Tors had to sliffle a strong St. Thomas comeback to notch a 21-12 victory. O'Connell's 20-fi victory came with no real sweat, and Clear Creek had no real problem in blasting Beaumont 41-20.

Friendswood and High Island won by identical 35-0 zips over Hitchcock and Beaumont Kelly JV, respectively. Texas City and Dickinson had to settle for ties. Dickinson dueled strong La Porte to a 6-li standoff. Texas City built up a seemingly solid 21-0 lead, only to see the advantage melt in the second half. The Stings had to settle for a '21-21 deadlock with Pasadena.

In addition to Hitchcock, only area schools losing their openers include La Marque to Conroe 10-7, Lake to Memorial 24-6, and Santa Fe to Channclview 26-18. Rohert Butler of Ball High, Elberl Williams of Clear Creek and Mike Long of Santa Fe head the individual scoring parade with 18 points each. Next high in scoring is High Island's David Davis with 16 points. O'ConncH's Paul Montalbano and Clear Creek's Carl Medley have 12 points each. A total of 31 area senior high school football players stand in the grid individual Scoreboard with points as a result of last week's openers.
