Sun-Sentinel, Tuesday, March 2, 1993 PB Coral Springs clergy team up on teen troubles i By DAMON ADAMS Staff Writer CORAL SPRINGS Maybe there is no earthly solution to the problems of teen-agers in this city. Or maybe it takes looking to a high power for down-to-earth answers, some Coral Springs clergy think. An informal group of clergy is working to find ways to quell teen troubles in their city. It is the first time religious leaders have banded together since problems started more than a year ago. Several religious leaders met with Vice Mayor Maureen Berk about two weeks ago, and more plan to attend a clergy meeting on Tuesday at St.

Andrew Catholic Church in Coral Springs. "We've got one humongous problem out here. We need to start seeing what we can do about it collectively," said the Rev. Jerry Straszheim, pastor of Lutheran Ministry in Christ. Pastors and rabbis have offered advice individually during community meetings organized to address local teen violence and rising tension between teen-agers and police.

Concerns have been mounting in the wake of increased gang activity and the beating death of Luyen Phan Nguyen, 19, in August in an attack some say was racially motivated. "If we lose the youth in this town, we're going to lose this town," said the Rev. John Erbeld-ing, a police chaplain and an Anglican pastor. Some ideas being explored by clergy include sponsoring Christian rock concerts and organizing youth sports programs. Church and temple youth groups also could mobilize to minister to troubled peers.

Berk said she will ask city officials to support the clergy's efforts. "The clergy touch so many segments of the community. I'm sure they could add a lot of beneficial approaches," she said. Berk helped initiate the cooperative effort. She heard about a Daytona Beach program that uses clergy to talk with teens at places where teens hang out.

After Coral Springs clergy reviewed the program, they decided that even more should be done. Representatives from five churches in Coral Springs attended the brainstorming session with Berk. Religious leaders said they hope to increase attendance at Tuesday's meeting. 4B WSVN anchor leaving Daniels to move to Chicago station By TOM JICHA TVRadio Writer Chicago is getting one of WSVN-Ch. 7's top talents and a Penny more.

"The general manager saw us together and decided that he wanted me too," Daniels said. Her husband, reporter Rick Le-venthal, is resigning to move to Chicago with her. "He has really been supportive about this," Daniels said. "He encouraged me to make this move." This isn't the first time Le-venthal has subjugated his career to that of his wife. Daniels and WBBM discovered Daniels while screening audition tapes submitted by Lovett, who announced in November that she would be leaving WSVN. Leventhal had jobs in Washington when she was hired by WSVN five years ago.

Leventhal landed a job as a reporter at WPTV-Ch. 5 in West Palm Beach before joining his wife at WSVN. "There are five stations in Chicago. We're confident Rick will be able to find something," Daniels said. Daniels and Lovett will be reunited in Chicago with Mark Toney, a former news director at WSVN, who assumes that position at WBBM next week.

"I feel like we're the talent pool for the world," WSVN News Director Joel Cheatwood said. He added that he has not made a decision on successors for Lovett and Daniels. Kelly Mitchell and Jessica Aguirre, who co-anchor WSVN's weekend newscasts, seem to have the inside track. Mitchell has been filling in on 7:30 for Lovett, who returned on Monday from a seven-week leave. Cheatwood said he expects Lovett and Daniels to work through March before departing for Chicago.

Daniels, whose contract expires this month, said her deal requires her to start at WBBM on April 21. Daniels also was the host of Inside Report, a locally produced daily tabloid magazine. Lovett, who joined WSVN in August 1988, has a contract through May. She originally expected to stay until then. But she has reached an agreement to leave earlier.
