While Sir Bear has raced well on the track, Ziadie has done a masterful job spotting the gelding. He took easy money at Thistledown and ran second to Subordination in the Grade II Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont.

But Ziadie's placing of Sir Bear in the Cigar Mile was perfectly timed. The veteran trainer knew Coronado's Quest and Affirmed Success were coming out of tough Breeders' Cup races. He also knew he was sitting with a relatively fresh horse in Sir Bear. While Sir Bear has rewarded his backers with some huge payoffs, don't expect the same next year. With Skip Away, Coronado's Quest, Awesome Again, Gentlemen and Subordination retired, Sir Bear could become one of the top handicap horses in the country.

Sir Bear and Ziadie deserve as much. No raves at Gulfstream Message to track officials at Gulfstream Park: What were you thinking last weekend? The track didn't do itself any favors when it allowed an all-night, rave dance party to be held at its facility from late Saturday night until 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Not only did the music keep neighbors awake most of the night, flooding the police department and city hall with complaints, 30 were arrested for possession of drugs. Gulfstream hosts (bad) classic rock concerts during its meet and should be allowed to host other concerts during the months it is not open.

But to allow loud music when there are 500 horses on the backstretch shows total disrespect for horsemen and their equine athletes. No animal deserves to have thumping bass and blaring music within earshot. Officials should wise up and remember that during the winter months they run a racetrack, not a dance club. 5 stakes upgraded Five of Gulfstream's stakes races have been upgraded by the North American Graded Stakes Committee. They are: The Fountain of Youth (Grade I), the Breeders' Cup Handicap (Gl), the Sprint Championship (G2), the Hallandale Handicap' (G3) and Sweetest Chant (G3).

Calder's only upgrade was the Princess Rooney, which becomes a Grade 3 It was 41 years ago Monday that Silky Sullivan made up 27 lengths to win the Golden Gate Futurity. Ziadie, a native of Jamaica, has had lots of success at Calder. He trained the game stakes-winner Migrating Moon, as well as Reggae Man, to seven consecutive victories in 1985. But he admits Sir Bear had him fooled at the beginning. "He really didn't show much at first, and that's why we gelded him," Ziadie said. "The first month we had him as a 2-year-old, I didn't think much of him, and I thought he might be better on the turf.

We put him in a $50,000 claimer the first time, and I didn't give him much of a shot. But he just got beat at the wire. "You know, he's always been a laid-back horse. Lynn, with a student enrollment of 1,700, is making its third tournament appearance, including two finals, since moving to NCAA Division II in 1996. Lynn's only loss this season was to Divison I power Penn State, ranked second in the nation. The Knights won NAIA titles in 1992, '94 and '95. "That was the best I have seen them play," Franklin Pierce coach Jeff Bailey said. "They are a very good team.

I thought our game was the championship final. I don't see them losing to Sonoma State." First-year Lynn coach Rocky Orezzoli, who won two state titles at Spanish River High School, is taking nothing for granted. "We enjoyed what we accomplished Friday because we worked very, very hard," Orezzoli said. "But as far as playing for the national championship, we know we are going to have to step it up another notch. Sonoma State is a phenomenal team.

We know we have to come back strong." 3h 6- 4 7- 3 4'A 1-2 8 6- 2 5-5 10.50 5h 6-7'A 20.00 7- 7 7-10'A 2.40 8 8101.10 PP-Horsa, Wt. stops Brazilians FORT LAUDERDALE D.C. United's won its last trophy under departing coach Bruce Arena the same way it won its first three years ago with a goal from defender Eddie Pope. Pope's left-footed tally in the 77th minute followed an early goal by Tony Sanneh to give United a shocking 2-0 win over Brazilian champion Vasco da Gama in the deciding game of InterAmer-ican Cup. United's two-goal win gave it a 2-1 aggregate victory over Vasco in the series, which is decided by total goals over two games. D.C.

United, which won the first MLS Cup in 1996 on an overtime goal by Pope, is the only team from the United States to ever win the InterAmerican Cup, which pits the club champions from North and South America. The win marked a major milestone for Arena, who coached his last game for D.C. United before taking over the U.S. national team, It also gives Major League Soccer its biggest international victory since debuting just three years ago. "This is a great accomplishment for us," Arena said.

In three years we've come a long way. In the next three years professional soccer in the United States can accomplish a lot more." As it did in a 1-0 loss to Vasco in Game 1 on Nov. 14, D.C. United was the more enterprising team Saturday night.

Before 7,283 fans at Lockhart Stadium, United took a 1-0 lead on Sanneh's goal in the 34th minute, leaving the two-game aggregate score deadlocked at one. Sanneh sprinted onto a skidding cross through the Vasco defense by defender Jeff Agoos and beat goalkeeper Carlos Germano with a sliding near-post shot. Faced with the embarassment of losing to an American team, Vasco picked up its pace in the second half. But it couldn't breach Pope or Carlos Llamosa in the center of the United defense. Pope's goal, which broke the 1-1 aggregate tie, started with a corner kick by Marco Etcheverry that found Roy Lassiter on the far post.

Lassiter headed down a pass to Pope, who found an opening in the Vasco defense. NOTE: MLS commissioner Doug Logan said the date for the 1999 MLS Cup being played in Foxbo-ro, Mass. has been moved from Nov. 14 to Nov. 21.

-JEFFRUSNAK By DAVE BROUSSEAU Staff Writer The Fusion made a move to improve its defense when it acquired defender Mario Gori from D.C. United on Saturday. The Fusion also received a second-round pick (19th overall) in the 1999 college draft in exchange for its second-round pick in the 1999 draft (17th overall) and a first-round pick in the 2000 college draft. "Both Ivo tWortmann and I are very excited to bring Mario to the Fusion," Fusion General Manager and Chief Operating Officer Betty D'Anjolell said. "We think he'll be a great help in leading us to MLS Cup '99." "It's good for me, and I hope I cart come in and make an impact right away," Gori said.

"I'm excited to play in the South Florida with players like Carlos Valder-rama and Diego Serna." Gori, 25, fills one of the two international allocation spots open on the Fusion roster. Gori spent four seasons with Argentina First Division team Rosario Central prior to joining D.C. United. In three seasons with D.C. United Gori appeared in 50 games with two goals and three assists.

"Gori is what we're looking for. He adds depth on defense," 5-Red Zona (Campbell) (.60 4.00 1.40 3-HI Socks (Dominguai) 5.40 4.00 1-Zubl Zareta (Bracho) S.00 EXACTA S-l paid $10.40 TRIFECTA 5-1-1 paid SUPERFECTA 5-1-1-10 paid PICK THREE (2-5-5) paid $159.10 SIXTH 6 furlongs, dirt, purse $23,500, 2 yo. winner time, 22, 45 'h, 58 'A, 1:12 'A, winner dk Aloha Prospector-Happy Everafterlng; trainer, Emanuel Tortora, owner, James Lewls ourg.
