(AP) Ivy Baker Priest, who once said her background of poverty qualified her best the office of Treasurer of the United States she held for eight years, has died of cancer at 69.

Mrs. Priest, who died Monday night at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, became the second woman to serve as U.S. Treasurer when she was picked for the in 1953 President DWighormer Eisenhower. Priest often recounted how she was introduced to the art of campaigning by her mother, who used her to run errands in a successful campaign to get wooden sidewalks installed in Bingham. An advocate of reduced government spending, Mrs. Priest took pride in her successful effort to establish her state office as the sole salesman of California bonds. Until then, several departments competed with the state treasurer's office in the bond market. Debate Over Jurors Continues For Trial Of AIM Leader Banks CUSTER, S.D.

(AP) Debate on challenges against two prospective jurors for the trial of American Indian Movement leader Dennis Banks continued Tuesday in Custer. In addition, another panel of prospective jurors was to report to District Judge Marshall Young. Prospective jurors for the trial had decreased to 19 by -midafternoon Monday following mostly individual questioning, in panel chambers. were dismissed for cause, and counsel was debating challenges against two others, one for health reasons in open court. The other, Larry A.

Vickers, rural Hermosa, was questioned at length over whether he believes Indians are "justified in seeking remedies to injustices of the past." Vickers replied in the affirmative, but he said that would not influence his decision ample evidence were submitted to prove the defendant guilty. Two jurors, Jim Emery and Susan Svoboda of Custer, have been chosen for the trial. Banks is charged with second- -degree arson, assault with a dangerous weapon without intent to kill, riot while armed with a club and two counts of burglary of an automobile. The charges stem from a February, 1973, incident in which AIM members and supporters were protesting manslaughter charges filed against a white man accused of killing an Indian. AIM wanted the charges changed to murder.

Pressler Appointed To Serve On House Science Committee WASHINGTON Rep. Larry Pressler, has been named to the House Committee on Science and Technology, it was announced by House Minority Leader John Rhodes. Rhodes said the Science and Technology Committee is responsible for several tasks pertinent to South Dakota. "For example, the Committee authorizes all energy research, including fossil fuel and nuclear energy. It is responsible for the ERTS satellite, which feeds data to the EROS Center near Garretson.

And weather research legislation--such as better tornado warning systems and weather modificationfall under this Committee. "Although two Committee assignments is a rough chore for any Congressman Ivy Baker and especially a freshman Representative Pressler's work on the Education and Labor Committee has shown me he can handle this new job as well." Rhodes said. Pressler has been assigned to two subcommittees under the full Committee the Energy Research, Development, and Demonstration Subcommittee, which deals with fossil fuels, and the Science, Research, and Technology Committee chaired by Congressman James Symington of Missouri. Judge Denies New Trial Motions For 7 Wounded Knee Defendants LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Federal Judge Warren Urbom Monday denied motions for new trials sought by seven defendants who were convicted of crimes in connection with the takeover of Wounded Knee, S.D.

Allen Cooper, Mark Fleury, Reginald Dodge, Johns, Colin Wesaw, Manuel Alvarado and Terry Williams had claimed that former Des Moines, Iowa, policeman Douglas Durham had supplied defense in.formation 1 to prosecutors at their trials. Durham was an FBI informant who attained leadership status Movement, the erican Indian. figured prominently in the Wounded Knee takeover in 1973. Durham testified at the trial here last month and told of his role as an informant. Urbom said in his order denying a new trial that there was no evidence that Durham got.

Fire Damages Lemmon Structure LEMMON, S.D. (AP) Fire has caused an estimated $150,000 damage to a structure housing a bowling alley and night club at Lemmon authorities said. Lemmon Fire Chief Gene Keller said faulty wiring caused the fire and subsequent explosion early Monday.

He said the explosion destroyed Antelope Pud's Pub on Lanes, Whitetail Lounge skirts of the northwestern South Dakota town. Keller said 35 firemen from Lemmon and Hettinger, 26 miles northeast of Sponsor Trail Ride IPSWICH, S.D. She is survived by two daughters; Patricia Priest Jensen, Tarzana, and Nancy A. Valenzuela, Long Beach, four grandchildren; and six brothers and sisters. Mrs.

Priest, named one of the 20 most outstanding women of this century by the Women's Newspaper Editors and Publishers Association, served as a director of the National Safety Council. She was the first woman to place a nomination for the presidency. At the 1968 GOP convention in Miami, she nominated then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan, in whose administration she served. George McGovern, predicts.
