Sun-Sentinel, Sunday, November 5. 1995 11 4. 'Ps ri FSU'S NEXT OPPONENT: NORTH CAROLINA Clemson blankets UNC with defense Sun-Sentinel wire services CLEMSON, S.C. Clemson looked a lot like North Carolina on Saturday, only better. The Tigers' defense grew weary of listening to the current NEXT WEEK Florida State at North Carolina The Seminoles attempt to bounce back against the Tar Heels.

Kickoff is noon on Ch. 4 and WQAM (560-AM). FLORIDA STATE (7-1) list of North Carolina's de 4 five Mike Thomas passes to keep the Tigers (6-3, 5-2) alive in the conference race a game back of Virginia and Florida State, and close to a bowl game. "We looked at this as a challenge, something we'd have to meet, and we went out and stepped up to it," Daw-kins said. It was the third straight victory this season for Clemson and it's ninth in 10 games against the Tar Heels.

For North Carolina (4-4, 2-3), it was a humiliating experience that seriously threatened any chance at the postseason. The Tar Heels had come in allowing just 229 yards a game, but gave up almost that many (215) in the first half. The Tigers finished with 325 yards, only the second time this year North Carolina has given up more than 300 yards. Thomas' five interceptions give him 17 this year and the Tar Heels have 29 turnovers on the season, most in the ACC. "There's not much I can say.

They weren't doing anything special, we just made too many mistakes," Thomas said. Clemson also shut down, for the most part, North Carolina's offense, coming up with a turnover or a stop when the Tar Heels threatened the goal. Jonathan Linton scored a 2-yard touchdown the first TD given up by Clemson since Oct. 7 to bring North Carolina within 7 points with eight minutes left in the game. The Tar Heels got the ball three more times after that, but Thomas had passes intercepted by Dexter McCleon with 2:11 to go and by Peter Ford on the game's final play.

"Let's don't forget where we're coming from, we were 3-3 at one point this year," Clemson coach Tommy West "We beat a good football team." Clemson still needs one more victory, either against Duke next week or against South Carolina on Nov. 18, to qualify for a bowl game. Virginia's victory over previously invincible Florida State on Thursday night also left the Tigers a game behind in the ACC race. 70 45 77 46 41 72 42 28 Nov. 11 Nov.

"We had to hear it from everyone about what North Carolina was going to do this week and it was like 1 i 1 ol' Clemson was off in the wilderness somewhere," said safety Brian Daw-kins, whose 49-yard interception return touchdown finished off North Carolina 17-10. "I guess we proved something." Nealon Greene passed for a touchdown and led a calm and steady offense that smacked the Tar Heels (4-4, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) just about out of bowl contention. Removable Soft Top In his first three seasons, Kanell, who was recently awarded an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship by the National Football Foundation, also played baseball, but he gave it up at the start of 1994 and didn't play last spring. He also switched majors from biology, aimed at medical school, to business where he nows averages 3.0. "I really wanted pre-med," said Kanell, whose father is an orthopedic surgeon, "but the time required for the labs and everything was just too much." Grooters said one reason the switch didn't cause Kanell to lose any time toward graduation was the flexibility of the business curriculum.

"It had a few more elective slots available so he was able to change without much loss of ground," Grooters said. Kanell said the hardest thing is finding a quiet place to study. "I was using the library for a long time and still do occasionally," he said, "but after the Miami game in 1994, I was there one night and these two people are a couple tables over from me. One of them says to the other, 'They need to get Kanell out at quarterback. He can't They didn't even know who I was.

I didn't go back to the library for a while." Kanell and Rebol have had to use summer school to increase their credits, and Grooters said Florida State requires athletes to complete 30 applicable hours each year, even if summer school is needed. Rebol, who has a 3.4 average in nutrition with an eye toward medical school, physical therapy or sports psychology, said he believes it was tougher for Kanell, his roommate as a freshman. "The demands football puts on his time are so much greater," Rebol said. "I really admire him for what he's done, especially his freshman season. What he went through that year was unbelievable." Without football, Rebol could have been finished in 3 'A years because he had 24 credits from high school that were applicable to college.

"I was fortunate enough to backup and play some on special teams as a freshman," said Rebol, a resident of Punta Gorda, "but I knew from the beginning, my time would have to equally divided between school and football. It's a very tough thing to do." Kanell, barring injury, appears certain to have a promising career in the NFL or maybe even professional baseball. But Rebol, at 6 feet, 215 pounds, can't be as sure. "I don't think a lot about the NFL," Rebol said. "I'd like the same chance everyone else would like.

I've set up my life day-by-day. If there's no football after college, I know where I'm headed." Any athlete capable of graduating in four years while completing his eligilibity has to be pretty well prepared to meet the challenges of life. "They're a pretty good bet to succeed," Grooters said, "because they've already done something very few people do." By CRAIG BARNES Staff Writer There are so few of them that the NCAA doesn't keep statistics on them, and the NCAA keeps numbers on just about everything. Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell and linebacker Todd Rebol are in a very select group. They are among the college football players to complete their eligibility and education in four years.

On this year's Florida State team, center Andy Crowe, tight end Terry Davis and punter Sean Liss will also graduate on time. Florida has defensive tackle David Barnard, offensive tackle Jason Odom, linebacker Dexter Daniels, center Kevin Johnson and defensive back Ben Hanks. Hanks graduated in 3 'A years, just as Ken Alexander did at Florida State in 1993. Miami's only candidate this season was offensive lineman Ricky Perry, but a knee injury could leave him with an additional year of eligibility. Notre Dame, where redshirts are seldom allowed, is the exception, but otherwise, a team is fortunate to have more than five players per year graduate in four years.

When athletes graduate in four years or less, they are usually redshirted and have five years of eligibility. On the other hand, players who complete eligibility in four years customarily need five years or longer to graduate. The average student-body graduation period at most schools is more than four years. "It takes an exceptional talent," said Dr. Roger Grooters, director of student services and academic support at Florida State.

"Then, he has to be lucky, in the right place at the right time and decide his major early and stick with it." With the 85-scholarship rule and the emphasis on academics, more freshmen will get a chance to play, and if they can stay healthy, they'll have a chance to graduate and complete eligibility in four years. "It's really an oddity," coach Bobby Bowden said, "because more programs redshirt as many freshmen as possible, especially quarterbacks. More freshmen are going to play in the future because of the scholarship limitations. There will be more need, and it'll cause coaches to give freshmen longer looks and be more willing to play them." When Kanell went to Florida State in 1992, he knew, even though he wanted to be redshirted, that it wouldn't happen. The Seminoles had no backup to junior Charlie Ward.

It meant Kanell had to learn the offense in the summer before his freshman season and be able to execute it if anything happened to Ward. "You have to manage your time very closely," said Kanell, a graduate of Fort Lauderdale's Westminster High School, "and that was something I had to learn. The first year I was so busy that I didn't have time to think. People don't understand the pressure involved with football the meetings, films, practice, studying the game plan and meeting with the media." a No Charge Air Up to $1336 in Option Package Values Standard Driver's Air Bag 4.0 Litre 190 h.p. 6 cylinder Available 4-wheel ABS (oil The 1996 Jeep Lineup.
