MS Sun-Sentinel, Sunday, July 26, 1998 5D MIAMI-FORT LAUDERDALE J- 4 A V. presents aren't a lot of us who say, 'This is where I live. This is where I want to make a I think people appreciate those of us who do that." Noe, notching his second win in the readers poll he was the favorite weatherman in 1986 said it is especially gratifying for him to be voted No. 1 in the same poll that has Lauderdale and Cefalo topping their categories. "It shows people are watching Channel 10.

I'm not into individual honors. We really are a team. I've been here for 20 years and despite the fact that television viewers are very fickle, it's nice to know that they still appreciate what I do." Cefalo came to Miami when he was drafted by the Dolphins after an All-America stint at Penn State. He set his sights on a career in broadcasting while he was still starring in the NFL. After his pro football career ended, he dabbled in many facets of television.

He was host of PM Magazine and AM South Florida, a mid-morning magazine show at WTVJ. He worked for the NBC network on News at Sunrise and the Today show, and was a commentator on the network's pro football coverage. He also dabbled as a host of game shows. He became the sports director at WPLG five years ago, on July 15, 1993. "This is back home for me," he says.

"I've learned more in the past five years than I did in the previous 15. The other things I did, such as the game shows, I had a free rein. Now I've learned time disciplines. I have only a few minutes to get in everything I want so I have to budget my words carefully." FROM PAGE 1 Previous polls picked Segreto as tops in sports field these days, to be singled out this way is really a great honor," Lauderdale said. Lauderdale has been a familiar face in the market for 24 years, the last 22 at WPLG.

He came to Miami in 1974 from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, to take a job at then-WCKT-Ch. 7, now WSVN. Answering a frequently asked question with a laugh, he said he did not become Dwight "Lauderdale" when he moved to South Florida. "People can go back to Columbus and check the records. My family name has always been Lauderdale." Longevity on local airwaves was a factor in the readers' balloting, he thinks.

"If you look at it, that has been -the history of this market. Ralph Renick the late dean of South Florida anchors was No. 1 for many years, then Ann Bishop took over for him." Long tenure seemed to hold the key in the Palm Beach County as well, where WPTV-Ch. 5 mainstays Jim Sackett and Kelley Dunn were the top vote-getters in the anchor race. The other favorites were weatherman Kent Ehr-hardt, who recently left WPTV after 13 years, and sportscaster Pat Murphy, who spent a decade at WPTV before moving to 12 three years ago.

"You've got to be kidding. This is really exciting. I feel like I'm just getting both feet into this thing." Segreto made the transition from the sports desk to the anchor chair in 1992, right after Hurricane Andrew. He maintained a presence in sports until last summer, doubling as the commentator on the 11 p.m. newscast.

Segreto is another testimony to viewers' appreciation of longevity in the market. Practically a native, he was 2 years old when his family moved to South Florida. He went to Curley High and the University of Miami and got his first job as a WTVJ intern while still in high school. That was in 1968. He has never left WTVJ.

"I think people like Dwight and myself are dinosaurs," Segreto said. "This business has become one in which the only thing that matters to a lot of people is how quickly they can get to the top to Los Angeles, to New York, to the network. There PALM has bred contentment among her fans. "I came here right out of college the University of Florida 12Mi years ago and I've been here ever since. Our viewers have seen me get married the station ran tape and they saw me pregnant with my two children.

I still meet women who say they were pregnant at the same times I was and felt we were doing it together. I guess a lot of people think of me as a member of their family. That really makes me feel good." Dunn said the honor is especially satisfying because former colleague and best friend Ehr-hardt also won. "Kent was so thrilled. He called me up all excited." Ehrhardt said leaving Dunn and the many other friends at the station and among viewers made his decision to go home again after 13 years at WPTV especially difficult.

"I thought I would never leave WPTV," he said. "I had a great job working for great people and a great company. There was nothing not to like. But KMOV-TV in St. Louis is the station I grew up watching, and St.

Louis is the place where both me and my wife grew up. It is the only place I would have considered. "My family and Kelley's family cried right up to the minute we left," he added. "My kids still call her Aunt Kelley." COMMENTS "I switched from Ch. 10 to Ch.

6 when Ch. 10's anchors became as animated as Ch. 7. But more often than not, it appears Jennifer Valoppi and Tony Segreto are following suit. Jackie Nespral is a breath of fresh air." M.A.

Garcia, Coconut Creek "I wish Ch. 6 would hire Jimmy Cefalo away from Ch. 10 and send Joe Rose anywhere but on TV." B. Worden, Pompano Beach "If you could combine Jennifer Valoppi with Dwight Lauderdale, you would have the perfect and most professional anchor team." J.W. Hatley, Fort Lauderdale Valoppi "Why must they all tell us three times in 30 minutes what they are going to tell us? I would rather they tell us more news." Allen Brown, Sunrise "I enjoy watching Anne Roberts and Khambrel Marshall together.

And Bill Kamal is a pleasure to watch. He is gorgeous! Mrs. Margaret Papach, Tamarac "Kelly Craig should be used more. I appreciate her bursts of whimsy." Gayle Buening, Davie "Ch. 12, you are the best.

No one else compares. Ehrhardt didn't even know he was being scrutinized by his hometown station. "The KMOV general manager had a condo on Hutchinson Island, and he used to watch our show when he was on vacation. When their weatherman retired, he gave the news director a tape of my work." The news director was sufficiently impressed to offer Ehrhardt a job.

Ehrhardt's victory is a lesson to those who don't understand that no matter the circumstances, every vote counts. Graciously, Ehrhardt said that he wishes that the contest with Matthews had been called a dead heat. "John is a great guy." There was no such close race among sportscasters, as Murphy ran away from the field. Before joining WPEC three years ago, he was with WPTV for 10 years. He left when he and the station couldn't agree on a new contract.

The key to his popularity, he thinks, is that he doesn't take sports too seriously. He spices his sportscasts with regular features such as bloopers billed as "Murph's Moves." "I try to make it more interesting than just reading scores. Sports is entertainment and I treat it that way. I think the audience likes to see me having fun with it." The final score of the readers poll bears him out. much.

You do your jobs with a lot of class." Judy Shafron, Boca Raton "When there is a story about Dade County, we are given pinpoint locations, sometimes even with a map. But for Broward news, we usually hear nothing about a street name or even a neighborhood. (Like we're orphans or something?) Otherwise coverage is good. Tell Kelly Craig on Ch. 6 to quit her sarcasm and poking fun of her colleagues when they make a mistake.

It's not pretty. Thanks, I feel better now!" Shirley Hargrove, Pompano Beach "Ch. 7 uses 'efforting' which is not a real word. Don't they know that?" Bill Haynes, Cooper City "I have not voted for any of the glorified 'reporters' on your list. They report virtually nothing from Tallahassee, the local school boards or civic government centers.

All they want to do is cover crime and fly to accident scenes. Rather than promote these pretty people with a contest, you should be asking them why their shows aren't worth watching except as mindless (police blotter) entertainment?" Doug Westcott, Lake Worth FisSiinff Horning: Steve Waters gets you hooked. In Miami-Fort Lauderdale, veterans Dwight Lauderdale of WPLG-Ch. 10 and Tony Segreto of WTVJ-Ch.

6 were voted top anchors; WPLG weatherman Don Noe and sports anchor Jimmy Cefalo rounded out the ballot. Sackett never imagined he would become a Palm Beach fixture, though he now acknowledges that "stability is one of the cornerstones" of his career, adding, "People are comfortable to see someone they are familiar with." When he was in the Army, he was stationed in Tacoma, and he fell in love with the Pacific Northwest. His goal after leaving the service, he said, was to find a job and live there. But after a brief sting in Bangor, Maine, he got the offer from WPTV and came to love South Florida, "which is as far from Pacific Northwest in weather and terrain as it is in miles. "For the first four or five years, I tried to get back to Seattle," he said, "but the longer I was here the more this area grew on me." Simultaneously, he grew on Palm Beach viewers.

Dunn also thinks familiarity FROM PAGE 4D Some readers say anchors appear too Animated' "I have always liked Ch. 10 the best, but now I'm going to change to Ch. 4 because any station that carries Jerry Springer's show has lost me as a viewer." Alice Parr, Pompano Beach the news is getting on my nerves. It's mostly about murders and free publicity for people in the entertainment field, such as Spice Girls, etc. Enough already!" Doris N.

Johnson, Tamarac "My biggest complaint in news is the lack of credibility on the part of most of the newscasters, some of whom appear at times to be reading the copy for the first time on camera. I also find that there is very little national news integrated into the shows." Harold Deutsch, Boca Raton "For years, I enjoyed listening to Dwight Lauderdale. Not anymore. I am convinced that he has taken drama lessons. Instead of sincerity, I see dramatics.

I have on several occasions called Ch. 10 to comment, but to no avail. I also feel that he is wearing too much make-up."
