"This year we felt really good about Kevin being able to handle the load and that enabled us to move Andrew to defense." "I thought I could do the job last year; we just had a lot of backs," McKenzie said. "I just had to wait my turn." McKenzie's future isn't certain. He's a junior academically, but he'll turn 19 before next season so he won't be eligible to compete in sports.

Hepler said he is trying to get his star back into a prep school. If that doesn't work out, McKenzie will finish his education at Plantation, work out with the team and maybe serve as an assistant coach. Second, third teams; Class lA-2Ateam, coaches of the year. 12C But McKenzie, who led his team to a county-best 12-1 record, was an easy choice as the Sun-Sentinel Offensive Player of the Year. Not bad for a player who didn't figure much in the Plantation offense a year ago.

Offensively, coach Frank Hepler depended on Marshall Mack and Andrew Burke last season, but with Mack having graduated and Burke being moved to cornerback, McKenzie became the featured player in the high-powered Plantation offense. He responded by rushing for more than 100 yards in seven of 10 regular-season games, the high being a 204- By MICHELLE GARDNER Staff Writer PLANTATION Ask Kevin Mc Kenzie about the past season and he just flashes the smile that nas De-come a trademark of the Plantation High running back. Only Dan Morgan of Taravella finished ahead of McKenzie and Morgan naa a more attempts to get his 1,327 yards. By MICHELLE GARDNER Staff Writer DEERFIELD BEACH For Deerfield Beach standout Stockar McDougle, the key game wasn't one he played. It was one he didn't.

The 6-foot-7, 320-pound lineman was a huge force along the offensive and defensive fronts for first-year Bucks coach Dallas Cameron. But McDougle learned a lesson midway through the season when Cameron suspended him for the biggest game of the regular season for violating team rules. The Bucks were 3-3 heading into a game against defending District 15-5A champion St. Thomas when Cameron decided to keep his Division I prospect on the sideline. The Bucks went on to a 15-10 win that helped secure the district title.

The moral of the story was that teamwork, not individual players, wins games. Deerfield Beach proceeded to wrap up the district the following week by defeating Nova and advanced to the state semifinals before losing to St. Petersburg Dixie Hollins. "He's the best high school athlete I've ever seen for a kid his size," Cameron said. "His agility is amazing.

He has all the physical skills, but his leadership ability is what really has come around. Ever since the St. Thomas game he has been a true team leader." McDougle finishes his high school career by earning Sun-Sentinel Defensive Player of the Year honors. He was a narrow choice over Plantation defenders Al Blades, Asa Francis and Karl Royes and Coral Springs' Steve Hutchinson. "He has really taught me a lot," McDougle said of Cameron.

"He brought in discipline and that's what this team needed." Though the football season may be over, some of the toughest decisions have yet to be made. After the holidays, McDougle will schedule his five NCAA visits. He also is working on the academic requirements he'll need to play Division I football. "I've heard from about every school you can name," McDougle said. "It does get to be a pain after awhile.

The phone is always ringing, but I'm really looking forward to college football."
