Wynn fought animal rights activists in a Washington, D.C., hearing last year when they protested his idea of putting dolphins in a desert environment. "They're not in a desert; they're in the, water," Wynn said, watching the three females and two males dive to the bottom of the 26-foot-deep lagoon, then shoot up, leaping above the water. "They don't know whether they're in Baja or Seattle." Wynn has been focusing on the dolphin habitat since opening his $630 million resort on the Las Vegas Strip in November.

The habitat, budgeted at $4 million, ended up costing an extra $10 million because of perks Wynn added. The resort was designed with, the help of veterinarians Lanny Cornell of El Ca-jon and Marty Dinnes of Los Angeles, two experts whose credits include work with some of the nation's foremost mammal parks. Dinnes is also the veterinarian for illusionists Siegfried Roy, who perform at The Mirage and keep many of their 22 rare white tigers in a habitat and compound at the hotel. Dinnes located four of the dolphins in Marathon and took care of them for eight months until they were ready for the trip to Las Vegas. The fifth was found in Texas.

Their habitat consists of three large pools and water that is climate controlled and cleaned every 2 'A hours through computerized equipment, maintaining a temperature of 70-74 degrees. The dolphins were flown to Las Vegas on Thursday aboard a chartered 727 jet. Their arrival was not announced in advance because of concerns over possible action by animal rights activists.
